Yes, I kinda figured that as I read more. Just nerve wracking when you've barely touched the stuff...

Finally got the BCH, but never did get it following official documentation. Updating my wallet solved the main issue of frozen funds. I moved them to the new wallet and then figured I'd use another linux box I had here that I've been learning on. The recommended Electron Cash wallet wouldn't load "Error: No module named dns" I went through the whole process twice thinking I'd missed something...

Finally put Coinomi on my phone, used the keys that all of you helpful people keep reminding everyone to BU and keep copies of, and a few minutes later, there was my BCH. Too easy - lol

Now to learn how to use Bittrex/etc. Got some new crypto

and seems a good time to diversify with a couple alts...

The "fear" around ElectronCash stealing your BTC is pretty much unfounded. At the time, it was relatively unknown and untrusted. I have been running Electrum and ElectronCash side by side on the same computer for months. I have not lost a single satoshi Wink

ElectronCash is perfectly safe... Provided you get it from the official website (just like Electrum, there are a lot of fake copycat sites offering fake versions)...

Getting BitcoinGold is slightly more complicated as there isn't an "Electrum Clone" for BitcoinGold at the moment... you need to export the private keys and import them into a BTG wallet like Coinomi or BitcoinGold Core etc... be VERY careful with BTG wallets... there are a LOT of scams involving BTG.

Thanks. This stuff can be nerve wracking for a guy like me... I'm sure it'll get easier.

So, after following above, I then get some sort of BitCoinCash wallet, like Electron Cash, and use my old electrum wallet seed with that to get the BCH?

The linked thread on StackExchange is close to my situation and this comment is what I'm concerned with:

i don't know what the issue is with 2.6.4 but if you have problems then do the following:
i am assuming you have already created a NEW wallet with Electrum 3.0.2, now use the seed of your old wallet (from 2.6.4) to recover it in your new wallet. that will create a new wallet file for you which will have all the keys you need.
now select an address from your NEW wallet and send all your funds from the old one to the new one using the same app.
you can open multiple instances of Electrum on one machine. there is no problem with that.

make sure to triple check everything before transferring anything and make sure you have a back up of your Seeds.

Hi all, Casual hodlr here... If I update electrum, will I still be able to get to my BitcoinCash (and BitCoinGold now I guess?) from the forks.

Finally got around to opening my wallet and looking into the fork. Read to be sure to move BTC to new wallet on a different machine before screwing with BCH. So I got the new Electrum (3.0.2) wallet ready, but can't send BTC due to "ERROR: Server did not answer" which I'm told elsewhere might be due to post fork issues with my old 2.6.4 wallet.

Just want to be extra sure not to screw up, I've learned a lesson the hard way before... Thanks
