Security Update for Yosemite last time I saw it in 2017: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1933?locale=en_US
Electrum and some of the latest updates from other software have also stopped supporting older OS.
For example, I can only use Bitcoin Core version v0.19.0.1 and Electrum Version 3.3.8 and can't update to the latest version because the OS (El Capitan) doesn't meet the latest software system requirements.
@OP may also need to consider bob123's suggestion to secure private keys and other sensitive data.

if you don't want to update macos you can [...]

Let me correct that for you:
Dear OP, if you don't want to update macos, you should really realy reconsider storing private keys (or any other sensitive data) on your computer.
You are using an outdated OS which does not receive necessary security updates anymore. It is like an open barn door for anyone interested in entering your computer.

if you don't want to update macos you can export the private keys via wallet > private keys> export. then import them in some other wallet. note that electrum appends the script type to the private keys so you will have to remove everything before the colon inclusive.

Another option you could try is setting up a "virtual machine" like virtualbox (free!) with Ubuntu or Mint or similar Linux Distro and load the latest version of Electrum into that so that you can restore your wallet using your seed and then move your funds to the Ledger.

Just download the latest version 4.0.3 from electrum.org and verify its signature. Restore your wallet from seed and you should be good to go.
After restoring the wallet you can safely send your fund to your Ledger.
Did you read the OPs post? Huh OP can't "just download the latest version"... it doesn't work on his OS, because he has an old version of MacOSX.

I have Electrum v3.1.3 not syncing and I cant download the newer version of Electrum since I use Yosemite.

-snip- I have Electrum v3.1.3 not syncing and I cant download the newer version of Electrum since I use Yosemite.
I'm a macOS El Capitan (10.11.6) user; the still usable version is Electrum 3.3.8.
You must have macOS Sierra (10.12) or higher to use the latest version of Electrum (4.0.3).

-snip- Can I just take the funds/BTC from my wallet and use another wallet, I do have a Ledger that I haven't initiated yet, maybe best to keep there?
Can you still use Electrum 3.1.3 to transfer assets to your Ledger? If not and if you haven't upgraded your OS, try using a virtual machine (Parallels Desktop, etc.); install MacOS 10.12 and above or Windows 10 and install the latest Electrum, then import the seed from Electrum 3.1.3 that you used before.

If the Electrum 3.1.3 can be still opening and running I think you can still sign a transaction on this version.

What you need is to know which addresses have funds and then make a transaction from here https://coinb.in/#newTransaction using that address and transfer it to another wallet(Ledger as you mentioned).
After you make unsigned transaction from the link above you can import it to your Electrum to sign the transaction and then broadcast it here https://coinb.in/#broadcast
Once it broadcast it will show on block explorer. Don't forget to check and calculate the miner's fee if you don't want to wait for too long

Use this link below instead to calculate the miners fee.

Or if you have Android phone you can install latest Electrum and import your backup seed.

Warning: Electrum versions older than 3.3.4 are susceptible to phishing. Do not download Electrum from another source than electrum.org, and learn to verify GPG signatures.

I suppose you are not aware of this phishing attack so consider yourself lucky you couldn't. You could've ended up downloading a fake wallet.

Just download the latest version 4.0.3 from electrum.org and verify its signature. Restore your wallet from seed and you should be good to go.
After restoring the wallet you can safely send your fund to your Ledger.

https://bit.ly/387FXHi lightning theory
Afaik it's the versions of python that don't let it work (if you've built from source) so I don't think this is in electrums control.

You're going to have to use at least v3. 3.5 and its recommended you jus tuse the latest version of the software. Older versions won't connect because the server rejects connections due to phishing and ddos attacks.

You can transfer funds to the ledger but you can't jus tput your seed into the ledger as the two aren't compatible protocols.

A little frustrated with all software/technology, that older versions are never supported or updated to continue to work with older platforms. I disgress;

I have Electrum v3.1.3 not syncing and I cant download the newer version of Electrum since I use Yosemite. Last time I had to upgrade from older version of Electrum to get it to work. Can I just take the funds/BTC from my wallet and use another wallet, I do have a Ledger that I haven't initiated yet, maybe best to keep there?

Any help/ideas would be much appreciated.
