I have run into exactly the same problem. My last payment was back in November, without problems. The whole thing is pretty scandalous, but as I don't even know where I might file a complaint, and seeing that no-one has replied to you after two weeks, I thought we'd better try and figure a work-around fast. Here it is, assuming that you have 8Gb of free hard disk space:
1. Download VirtualBox:
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.34/VirtualBox-4.3.34-104062-OSX.dmg(v. 4.3.34 is the last version that works under OS X 10.6.
2. Download the Linux Ubuntu version that goes for you (64 or 32-bit) from
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktopIf you're a Mac-only user and not a nerd, be prepared for a traumatic culture shock, and be ready to spend quite a bit of time setting up both VirtualBox and Linux. Exhausting, actually. The GUI being quite different even from Windows, there are still some features which I wonder how to activate (if they exist at all, that is.)
3. With the Ubuntu Virtual Machine running, make sure to install the "Guest Additions CD image" from the Devices menu.
4. To install Electrum/Linux, DO NOT use the Ubuntu Software Center that will appear in the Launch Bar: the version there is 1.9.7 and it will give you the same error as 1.9.8 in 10.6.8 (I've tried, thanks). Rather, follow the Linux "Easy installation" instructions indicated here:
https://electrum.org/#download
Ctl+Alt+T opens the Terminal in Ubuntu. Because the clipboard wasn't working as it should between the Mac OS and Ubuntu, I copied and pasted the instructions in a TextEdit file, made it plain text (Format menu) and saved it on the Mac Desktop before dragging it to the Ubuntu Desktop. I could then open it in the local text editor and paste the contents in the terminal.
5. During installation, it will request you to use your seed in order to recover your wallet. Theoretically, you could also paste it from the Mac's Electrum menu into a TextEdit file and so on, as described above.
That should do the trick.
Occasionally I have ended up with a blank screen, leading me to believe that things were not working, but quitting Electrum and relaunching it made the contents of the synchronized wallet visible again.
