in other words you are using a centralized exchange that has not upgraded their system for about 3 years to include a new feature in bitcoin called Segregated Witness that were added back in 2017. it should make you wonder what else have they not upgraded. is their security is also obsolete and many years old?!

it seemed to have something to do with it being a bech32 (native segwit) address which aren't apparently supported yet?
Is there a way for me to create an address that I can use on CEX.IO? Or should I use a different wallet/software with that?

cex.io aren't supported bech 32 address
I will try to create a new wallet and follow instructions.
Being my very first transaction I really have nothing there in the default wallet, hopefully I'll be able to figure this out.

Just follow the instruction post above how to change into legacy where support withdrawing your balance.
you might follow the instruction with image https://bitcoinelectrum.com/creating-an-electrum-wallet/

Bech32 is very well supported by the network and being a native segwit address type, it offers a lot of benefits over traditional addresses. Some companies hasn't implemented it yet.

If you'd like, you can choose to generate addresses which are legacy addresses or Segwit nested in P2SH address. AFAIK, there is no clear cut way to generate the latter so for simplicity, you can just generate a new wallet and select legacy address as your address type.

Yes there is, you'll want to make a new wallet.

Go to file > new > enter a wallet name > standard wallet > generate seed (or something like that > and then when you see a checkbox for legacy or segwit, hit legacy and continue with the startup.

You might want to move your funds to segwit from within electrum but you can leave them in either form.
You could also send a feature request after this to cex because if they get enough they'll likely change their site to accept them...

Hello everyone,
thank you in advance for the help and apologies if this has been asked before. I'm a total noob in cryptocurrency, I had to learn the basic really quick for some payments, I downloaded Electrum wallet going with the recommendations I found online.
I managed to understand how to buy bitcoins, I used CEX.IO but when I went to try to transfer them to my electrum wallet I got a message saying "invalid bitcoin address".
For the little info I could gather and the little I can understand, it seemed to have something to do with it being a bech32 (native segwit) address which aren't apparently supported yet?
Is there a way for me to create an address that I can use on CEX.IO? Or should I use a different wallet/software with that?
