Thanks.  I've gone ahead and installed it.  Having checked the signature my understanding is I have done what is necessary.  I was just a little cautious because last time I overrode a UAC Error I ended up installing a load of spyware (that was a Filezilla download from SourceForge).
That was probably because it was downloaded through SourceForge, I've heard that their downloads are infamous for containing spyware. Like I said before, if file checksums and signatures work out, you shouldn't run into any problems.

Hi Guys

Can anyone tell me if it's normal to get a Publisher Unknown error message from Windows User Account Control when installing the Electrum Wallet?

Thanks

Yes.

If you've verified the integrity of the installer and it isn't working I'd disable UAC. Just type "UAC" into the windows search, open up the UAC settings and change the UAC setting to "never notify". You shouldn't run into any more problems when installing.

Hi.  Thanks for your reply.  I have used Kleopatra to check the signature of the Electrum download.  I was concerned about a "Not enough information to check signature validity" message I got, but apparently I get that because I haven't validated Animazing's key personally, so the sig check is done, it's just I haven't validated his key.  See thread:

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.11880620

However, I would still like to ask, does Electrum normally give a "Publisher Unknown" message for everyone else?  I am trying to establish whether this is normal, or whether it's just happening for me.

Many thanks

Next to the download files on the Electrum download page are signature files.  These can be used to verify that a file you downloaded was approved by the Electrum developers. You will have to install appropriate software to use these signatures.  I used GnuPG on my Windows system.  It takes some effort to learn how to configure and use this software.  In addition to learning how to verify files with detached signatures, you will also have to learn how to identify, download, install and certify the appropriate public keys belonging to the Electrum developers.

You can always bypass the "user account control" message on Windows.  If you do this without first verifying the file that you jhave downloaded you are very foolish.  If you are spoofed and happen to download a bogus file you may end up running malware.  A Trojan horse may be hidden in your system waiting to capture all your passwords, steal all your bitcoins or  empty your bank account if you use the computer for on-line banking.

I haven't seen that error before and I don't think you should be seeing it either. Are you downloading Electrum from their official website? ( https://electrum.org )

Yes I am.

I'm attempting to install on Windows 8.1 Pro if that makes any difference.

Hi Guys

When I go to install the Electrum Wallet on Windows, I get a User Account Control error message saying "Publisher Unknown".

I think this is to be expected and is not something to worry about.  I'm guessing that because Electrum is opensource, Publisher Verification is not something that can be done.  Can someone confirm that for me?

Thanks
