Can you provide a bit more information about your setup, such as your OS and Electrum version. Also, are you using a "seed based" (aka HD) wallet with 12 word seed or a traditional keystore (collection of random private keys)?
I vaguely remember that there was an issue around Electrum 2.5 or 2.6 where it would go into an endless synchronising loop... For the record, the current version is 2.8.3

there is no ethereum version of electrum last time i checked!
OP may not be aware that he can only participate in ICOs using ETH or maybe he wants to purchase ETH tokens with BTC that he holds in this electrum wallet.

Wallet keeps synchronising, I've tried to restart, change server and reinstall - nothing helps. It worked correctly in the morning. I'm in hurry to participate in SONM ICO this evening. I assume I can just export private keys and restore wallet in some other client?
Yeah, you can always export your private keys and restore in another wallet or a portable version of Electrum.
If you are using an HD wallet, all you need is your seed as well and you should be able to recreate your wallet in Electrum which may resolve the issue.
