He literally said "I sent the address" right there in the quote.
If it's the QR or a Bitcoin URI, he would've said something like "I sent the QR Code" or "I've shown him the QR Code".
For manual copy of URI with address, it is still vulnerable to clipboard hijacking malware.

I'm not sure the countre-party has copy-pasted the wrong address! He said he generated a request and the counter party copied it via his mobile phone. My guess is that he generated a qr request and the sender scanned it. The seender might've propably editet the sent amount but am pretty sure he hasn't edited the recipient address.

Since it's certainly sent to a wrong recipient though malware (or not), you must investigate who's responsible for the lost amount.

Check your conversations for the actual address that you sent him and cross-check it to your Electrum wallet's 'Address' tab manually (don't copy).
("View->Show Addresses" to show the tab)

Then it's simple:

• If it's there, you've sent him the correct address, it's his liability.
• If it's not there, you've sent him the wrong address, it's your liability.

Confirmed Bitcoin transactions are irreversible so discuss who pays who.

If the transaction doesn't show in your wallet's history tab then that means it hasn't been broadcast yet. What you see in the receive tab is just the request you created which doesn't mean much. It just inform you about the request status. You can delete it to avoid confusion.

Where did you get the transaction ID from? This is the most important question you need to answer so we can help you. You said the transaction doesn't show up on the history tab so where did you get the hash from?

If a transaction has been confirmed then there is no way for you to recover the coins.

Requests are not important, the receiving address in the actual transaction is important. If your friend sent to the wrong address, it is important to act quickly, before the transaction is confirmed on the network. He still has the option to cancel the transaction using the RBF feature. First of all, you need to identify whether the recipient's address is part of your wallet or not.

That is why I asked for txid to get a clear picture of what he is trying to say.

So I assumed it was unconfirmed that TX arrived in the tab but it also could be he got the txid from the friend and tried to track the receiving address via Blockchain Explorer.

OP makes it look confusing, he did not receive the coins at all and he thinks his address will expire, but which is not correct. I think what this may later lead to is for OP to request for the txid and check the address that his friend sent the coin to, but after confirming that the mistake is not from his end by going through the address he sent his friend and making sure it is from his Electrum wallet.

Of course, the clipboard hijacker can replace wherever we copy and paste the contents but talking about this scenario where OP can see the unconfirmed TX which means funds were sent to the right destination or am I missing anything here?

Clipboard malware can affect the address that you copy and paste, not only the address that you copy and paste on your wallet sending tab. If you are sending the address through a message, it is likely that it can be replaced by a hackers address. Be it when you want to send bitcoin to someone or you want to send your address to someone, check and recheck that the address you send or that you want to use to send the coin is correct.

But OP is in the receiving end here so I guess it is unlikely to have any clipboard malware cause if it's in the first place then the funds sent by the friend will go to the hacker's wallet instead of OP's but he said he can see the unconfirmed TX which means the funds were sent to the right address as far as I am concerned.

First of all, you don't need a request to receive TX, all they need is your BTC address so your friend likely copied and pasted your address and sent funds to you instead of using your request which might be the reason why you are seeing wrong amount.

Also, I wanted to ask that your friend send funds using a wallet or custodial service like exchange?

Even if it's from the wallet the funds may come to you from different UTXOs of different addresses which vary from wallet to wallet and which one you opted for.

To get a clear idea of what is happening, do you mind sharing the TX id?

Did you fill in the "amount" column? What I know is that it will produce a handy link or QR code which very rarely results in errors from the sender's side provided the sender doesn't change any input from the link receiver send.
I think your friend has completed another payment that's not yours.

If transaction is already confirmed with wrong receiving address it is irreversible situation.

I think you should address your friend and wonder  about address to which he sent mBTC, by asking him along the sum, and compare his answer with the address in your request.

The amount and expiry time are just for your own reference. They don't change how much someone can send you and addresses are good forever and never expire. However if your friend sent to the wrong address then there is nothing you can do about that. You have to ask him why he sent to a different address than the one you gave him.

Does this mean that the receiving address is different and the amount is different? Was the transaction confirmed or not, and was the wallet emptied, or sending just the wrong amount?

To know if the address belongs to your Electrum wallet, input the command line in code below on your Electrum console. Click on view -> console and check ✔️ it. On the GUI, click on the console and write this command:


If it shows true, that means the address belongs to your Electrum wallet.

Or click on view, check ✔️ address. On the the GUI, click on addresses and you will see the lists of addresses. Look for the one you are referring to.

If it is on Electrum mobile
At the upper left corner, click on your wallet name -> addresses. You will see the lists of addresses. Check if you see the address that you are referring to.

If your friend send the coin to the right address, you will see your coin even before I has one confirmation one Electrum. Bitcoin address can not expire. Even if you want, you can continue to use a single address for receiving payment, but that may affect your privacy.

Do not accept unconfirmed transaction, let it has at least 1 confirmation.


Likely either your device or your friend device has clipboard malware, in a way you or him will copy the address, but the device will paste hackers address. Check and recheck address before you send it to someone or before you make bitcoin transaction. Go and check the address you sent your friend and look for it on your Electrum wallet as I explained about it.

Maybe he has a malware that chage the destinations address when they are copy-paste

If the transaction is not confirmed he can use another device to make a transacction replacement with the RBF option.

Requests expiry doesn't mean anything. If you're sure of the address, the funds will show whether the request has expired or not as you have full control of the receiving address.

But if the address you gave him or in your Electrum address, is different than the one you can see on the blockexplorer, then he might have sent to the wrong address.

I have a transaction that was made without the proper request from the Electrum wallet.

I initially created a request for 1 mBTC, I sent the address, my friend instead sent a different amount. The transaction doesn't show in the History tab, only in the Receive tab. It has 21 hours left and it will expire. I have tried to track using the transaction ID but they receiving address is a different BTC address. I made sure that I sent the correct address and my friend copied it using his phone, so I don't think he coppied it wrong.

Can the money be recovered with a request that is in the wrong amount? Or are they lost forever.
