Locked bios... I can only boot from my (bitlocker encrypted) HDD.

Since you have access to the hardware, you actually have also access to the bios.

Resetting the bios will clear the password. There are jumpers on the motherboard to exactly do that.
The exact procedure is depending on the model used.

While i guess that you won't do that (and you probably shouldn't), you definitely can  Wink

And yeah if it's Windows 10 with bitlocker then the "bios settings" have been moved. If you've got a spare USB you can probabky find them and boot from the USB with an operating system like Ubuntu (though I've never not been an admin of a win10 machine so I don't know if those settings are blocked).

Locked bios... I can only boot from my (bitlocker encrypted) HDD. Trust is very hard to come by in the company i work for... There are over 10.000 employees, and even if you're part of the ict department (which i am), you get the same locked down laptop as everybody else (unless you're teamleader, or part of the team that manages the laptops).

I do have some shortcuts to get binaries whitelisted or get domains added to the proxy whitelist, but my arm isn't long enough to get the bios password. It's a bummer really, i have to pay extra taxes because i can use my work laptop privately, but the darn thing is so locked down it's really hard to do anything "fun" with it.

Ask your admin to whitelist virtualization software (such as VirtualBox) or use HyperV Tongue

--snip--
Good you figured it out, i can imagine it's very confusing for people who only have Tor Browser & confused why the option only can be seen sometimes.

Yeah, i'd love to do that... But apparently there's a problem with virtualisation software on pc's that use bitlocker (at least that's what the team in charge of user's laptop's configuration has told me).
And since i manage the partitions on our power infrastructure, and i have full access to our vmware vsphere, I can make as many vm's as i want on both power and x86 professionally, so they don't want to bother investigating virtualisation sollutions for my personal use.

That being said, I find completely hiding options to be confusing for everybody... I mean, why would you completely hide options... That's just asking for discussion like this one. If an option is greyed out, everybody will immediately realise that the option exist, but for some reason it's not available to them.
Maybe i'll open an issue on github somewhere in the future... Maybe (if i find the time), i'll do a pull and see if i can fix it myself... However, this seems like a deliberate choice of (one off the) dev(s), so i doubt they would merge a "fix" anyways.

I thought dynamic buttons were meant to be more user friendly. If you open the issue, instead make a button that says "proxy settings" or something.

And yeah if it's Windows 10 with bitlocker then the "bios settings" have been moved. It might have been a better idear of ThomasV to disable the select menu instead of hiding it... That way it would have made more sense... A bit like: "the menu option is there, but it's disabled because i'm not running the tor proxy"
That's more logical at least this will not confuse users.
There is another thing as well when we create a transaction - instead of going to a new window it's more user-friendly to let the fees to set in the same window as it was before.

That being said, you are 100% correct, if you look at the code you'll see it's right there:
https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/b7c2820951fe4a115fd7519a87425c5fe117dacc/electrum/gui/qt/network_dialog.py#L411

Code:
def suggest_proxy(self, found_proxy):
  if found_proxy is None:
    self.tor_cb.hide()
    return
I do not understand code much, but I am glad that you figured it out.

I see where it went wrong. It appears only if you have Tor browser open. Try opening the browser and then reload this window, I am pretty sure you will see the tor box.

I think this latest version of Electrum is confusing with some features.

I can't run the tor browser bundle on my employer's laptop (we can use our laptop for private purposes, but all binaries we run have to be whitelisted first, and i really do not want to go to the laptop's admin and ask him to whitelist the tor bundle  Grin)

No "tor" select box, but you can still run tor proxy locally and configure electrum to connect trough the tor proxy manually...

Maybe nc50lc has macbook too. In Windows version I do not see any reason to have two different versions as mine is the latest one too.

just as a reference, here's mine: electrum 4.0.2 portable on windows 10 (i don't like windows, but it's my work computer and my company forces windoze OS on all company laptops).

I don't know what happened, I just disconnected and reconnected, and the stuff if here.

thank you for your help, you are my hero, thank you for your support and precious help.
The problem remains mystery however good to hear that it worked for you eventually.

I checked mine (Electrum 4.0.2) and found out both options still exist.

maybe worth mentioning I am using a Macbook, and vs 10.15.5 with electrum 4.0.2

I do not see the first " use tor proxy " selection on my wallet, that's also interesting.
I am not that of an expert with VPN and TOR, what I can say is that I use sometime a TOR browser, now not started.

so I assume a "normal" connection.

Those screenshots cannot be seen by us, they're stored locally on your macbook. You can upload them to imgur or something and post the links here, but do be carefull not to show sensitive information. Your seed phrase, xprv and derived private keys are defenately sensitive (never share any of those 3 with anybody). Transaction id's and addresses could be sensitive if you're very privacy-focussed. Nobody can rob you if you post a transaction id or address, but they can link a transaction or an address to your bitcointalk user.

As for your problem, what color does the button in the right bottom corner have? Also, do you have enough diskspace? Are you sure you selected the right wallet file (and not an empty wallet)? (Just brainstorming for potential problems here...)

Sorry, never mind... Just noticed i overlooked the post where you already said your problem was solved  Embarrassed

I still wanted to leave the post up as a reference for you: sharing the path to screenshots on your local computer doesn't help us in fixing your problem Wink

AFAIK, that option was removed in the latest versions, I too can't see that option.

If it's newly launched/installed, your Electrum client will have to download the "block headers" from the connected nodes before it can be displayed as "online".
The whole file is now around 50,553kB, so that might have taken a short while to finish.

sorry not to have mentioned, I am using the latest version.

Is it caught on synchronising or not connected if you're not using a vpn or have configured electrum for one..

Do you have any antivirus installed that could be blocking it? (normally you'll see a popup)..

Are you using VPN or tor?
In this case you will need to have it tor enabled.

If you are using a normal connection then just uncheck these two.

Try to install the latest version which will be found @ https://electrum.org/#download
Although you will be downloading it from the official site but still it's recommended to verify the file before installing. Here you will find a tutorial: https://bitcoinelectrum.com/how-to-verify-your-electrum-download/

Once you install the latest version then if you still have any problem the post here. I am watching this topic.
