finally something useful coming out of his mouth

Nope. As usual, only garbage is coming out. This guy is trying to instill fear in other people's mind about artificial intelligence. AI is not something which we should worry about. It can do a lot of wonders to the humanity. We need to realize that AI can help us in a big way in many fields, such as space exploration, defense, and medicine.

All of those benefits are definitely possible with AI; there's no doubt about that. But there is a risk in terms of whether it will have its own intent, or whether it will be a slave to humans. That is unknown at this point.

I completely agree with you. Artificial intelligence scares me. Even if we look at the history, not all of the scientific inventions have benefited the mankind. Nuclear weapons is a perfect example. I just hope that AI will not turnout as the next Frankenstein's monster.

Elon Musk has called the greatest threat to human civilization
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has described artificial intelligence as "the biggest risk to civilization." Moreover, the Isma urged the government to intervene and restrict research in the field of artificial intelligence. Perhaps "Terminator" is his favorite movie.
I have to agree with Elon Musk on that, why in the world would we want to create artificial intelligence by the way, why create a species stronger and wiser than yourself, there is no logic to it at all. They will strive to rule us and i dont want to be stuck in a matrix of anykind.

It is counterintuitive at best. Smart enough to be able to create something that has the potential to make us useless.

I like Elon Musk. He makes sense to me.

He is very smart, though I wish he wasn't taking so many government subsidies and all that stuff. I think he would do well to do that through fundraising and other stuff if he need more capital to do big projects.

Any way, yes, it makes no sense to build an AI that is better than humans to the point it will self replicate and take over the world.

The development of technology in any case will lead scientists to create artificial intelligence. If people are aggressive and intellect will be the same. You can't stop progress, and what it will be depends on people.

Since when in human history has the human race shied away from inventing something potentially harmful if it's still possible to invent?

I can't think of one example. Even if enough rational minds are convinced it's a road they shouldn't go down, there'll be enough irrational minds to push it through.

It's coming no matter what.

Heil Ultron eh?

I think this is a possibility but would probably only happen if the development is not carefully overseen. I think rogue AI is the modern day version of the Frankenstein's monster trope from literature. Given enough control, a rogue AI can really do much damage. And you don't even need invincible body like Ultron. Just look at ARIIA from Eagle Eye deciding that the US government is a threat that must be removed.

I'm not sure how the "restriction" would work though. Are they restricting research to the US government only?

AI will eventually destroy everything, at least most humans. What would happen is very similar to Terminator. They keep some humans around as slaves to build/fix things and they just kill most of them.

Self aware robots or AI will get together and do it at the right time.

Why keep meatbags as slaves when you are smarter than them and can just repair yourself?

Hahaha exactly. People watch too many movies. I don't understand what Elon Musk is worried about here.

If Elon Musk was intelligent enough, then he would have never said something like this. Technological progress can't be stopped, although it can be slowed down. And we should brace for the technological progress and its advantages, rather than being afraid about what it can do for us.

Seems than Elon Musk is a very smart libertarian, who offered an unusual idea how to hiddenly destroy U.S. government!

Lets assume US govt will accept his idea and restrict AI research. China and EU will take lead in the AI, then use it do disintegrate United States (main economic competitor for them). Damage to US economy will be so big that it likely will repeat USSR fate!

However, keep in mind that such potential dangers are quite far from us right now. There has been a tendency in the press to blow this up out of proportion to attract attention. It could hurt AI research. Instead, we should encourage research towards better understanding these issues, to build an understanding that can, if the day comes that it becomes something more concrete to deal with, prepare us better and provide us with safer AI that respects human values.

This is definitely possible. how soon that cannot be predicted at this moment

Today I came across this article that says AI bots have started chatting in their own language that is not understood by us:

I do not know but why would it become the biggest risk to civilization aside from helping us in some job.  Maybe it will dominate the livelihood or certain jobs of human and then yes, I will agree.  But considering they are robots and human made them, then it will not be a threat.  You can destroy them using certain commands or spill some water to them and then they will die. Grin  I still believe that it will not be a threat.  Humans are still great than anyone here on earth.
