After following the link from inside Electrum and updating the wallet I get:

Cannot load wallet (2):
WalletFileException('This version of Electrum is too old to open this wallet.\n(highest supported storage version: 33, version of this file: 40)')
Sometimes phishing ads can pop up on your phone but I'm not sure if such can pop up while elctrum wallet is opened, it's seemed like a legitimate link from electrum I had such message but I'm yet to update mine because I'm scared to death, I'll not update from the app wallet i'd go to the official website and get the new version.
  • Clear your app cache
  • Uninstall and to go the official site and download again.
    There you goo!!!

The wallet file is created with Electrum 4.1.0 (see https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/4.1.0/electrum/wallet_db.py) or newer, while your Electrum is version is 4.0.9.
If you update your Electrum to to 4.10 or newer (currently it's 4.11), you should able to open the wallet file.

P.S. make sure to download from electrum website and verify the file.

Did you download version 4.0.9 from the official site or an older version in which you then tried to update? Please confirm that you downloaded the 4.0.9 from the site, otherwise you've been phished. Nonetheless, whether you downloaded the official or not, you should never leave an electrum unverified:  [GUIDE] How to Safely Download and Verify Electrum.

Before doing anything you'll regret, just remember that a guy lost 1400 bitcoins, because he didn't do the above verification. (BTC Stolen #5072)

OP need to download wallet from electrum.org and if can see Bitcoin in the upgraded wallet. Please move create a new et with legit Electrum and move Bitcoin from old to new wallets.

4.0.9 is a very latest version so that error looks weird. It can be a phishing wallet.

If OP is lucky enough, move funds out of that wallet before the phishers do it.

The link was inside the wallet.

Downloaded from https://electrum.org/#download

Currently running version 4.0.9 of the wallet
You need to remember the site address and download wallet from it. Or bookmark that domain in browser or save it in your own document.

Rely on link in application is bad.

Don't trust, verify the signature.

OP, are you sure you downloaded the wallet from the site? Since you write that a pop-up window with an update recommendation has dropped out. This is more like phishing. In addition, the warning says that the version is old, probably the wallet was not installed, or did not get up correctly.
Try to do a clean install, removing all previous versions, checking the signature first.

That sounds weird, if you truly update the wallet then there should be no error message saying that your version is too old. Looks like you downloaded a fake one claiming to be a 4.0.9 then. I suggest you follow the guide shared above and double-check everything. I do hope you have a backup of your seed just in case something goes wrong.

For security: Always verify the signature of any electrum wallet you download before importing funds into it.
For Windows - https://bitzuma.com/posts/how-to-verify-an-electrum-download-on-windows/
For MacOS - https://bitzuma.com/posts/how-to-verify-an-electrum-download-on-mac/

What version of electrum do you have installed? Edit: already answered
Have you been running the software on your device smoothly before you tried updating?
I have not had this problem personally, but this guide could be useful in fixing the issue - https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum-docs/blob/master/tails.rst#using-the-most-current-electrum-on-tails
Always verify, don't trust

Download Electrum from https://electrum.org/#download

Any Os for computer or mobile, download from that link.
Verify Electrum wallet. Verify your downloaded file.

Which version of Electrum you have? Do you have older version than 3.3.4?
Quote
Warning: Electrum versions older than 3.3.4 are susceptible to phishing. Do not download Electrum from another source than electrum.org, and learn to verify GPG signatures.

Electrum vulnerability allows arbitrary messages, phishing. Vulnerability of version older than 3.3.4

Where did you download electrum? A link inside electrum sounds like phishing. Google it, people lost their funds that way.
