Absolutely nothing stops the person holding the escrow from running off themselves, so you need to make sure you choose someone you can trust to come through on such a deal.

Thats something to consider each time you escrow w. anyone on this forum. OR off this forum as well.

Its why people always mention to go with a reputable trusted escrow. Which you can find some here, whos done lots of transactions.

Eg: John K - already proved himself to the forum, with the past transactions with large amounts.

If you dont want to go with a individual handling it, there are websites like http://btcrow.com/

But, other question part is there isnt much you can do. Simply because your just handing someone your money / btc to hold.

Hope that helps.

John K is probably no loner the best example now, after he has vanished for more than 2 months...

Usually esrows are single people that hold the funds and the 2 out of 3 isn't used that often. 2 out of 3 protects him from running with the funds, unless he temas up with the other party.

Thanks for the response. Would an escrow service using three-sig transactions (ig. buyer, seller, and escrow service get key and 2 of the 3 keys can release funds.) help to protect against fraud, or is that how most bitcoin escrow services typically work anyways?

If required to use an escrow service that you are unfamiliar with (untrusted) what stops the escrow service from taking the funds apart from the fact that their reputation and potential for future business will be ruined?
