Let me explain. I don’t just mean in terms of covid, but we can start there. You know the statistic by now: America has 5% of the world’s population, but 20% of its covid deaths. What that means in practice, though, is that if you’re American, your chances of getting sick and possibly even dying from an illness which has been handled much better in other parts of the world, is vastly higher. How much higher? Well, for example, New Zealand has conquered Covid not once, but twice. Across even Africa and Asia, Covid has been largely kept in check. Your chances of succumbing to Covid as an American are anywhere from 5 to…well, technically, anywhere from 5 to infinity times higher than most of the rest of the world right now.
It’s fine in exactly the same way as to how you don’t know why your house doesn’t collapse. You think you know, but ask any construction worker or architect, and you’ll find out that you have no clue what’s keeping your house standing upright for decades on end. Or, if your car breaks down, you think you know what’s wrong, but you aren’t able to fix it yourself, so you bring it into the repair shop.

Feldman refers to a collection of associated factitious behaviors as “disease forgery:” falsely reporting illness; feigning illness, including episodes like mimicking seizures; falsifying lab reports; exaggerating or aggravating an existing condition; inducing an actual ailment through self-harm; and dissimulating or avoiding treatment so that a minor medical problem becomes serious. But they mostly go through the motions of being ill on social media.
