This is not the first time I will be seeing scam ETC fork. It happened in 2019. In fact, they had a bounty campaign for it, hut their plan was foiled by experts who detected their scheme earlier. However, before that, some had fallen victim.

I thought by now people would be smart to know about fork coins. I have never even claimed any of the non BTC fork coins because not only is it dangerous,,, it is probably just not worth anything at all.

And even if you want to claim coins, why rush? Why not wait for more stable and legit versions to appear before claiming them, right?

I got official announcement with bigger market will support for ETC hard fork progress and have new coin from hard fork with ETC, they have announcement with listing date when hard fork of ETC begin and give their announcement in social media account and giving update news in email account, I will participated on this hard fork because looks potential to be with higher price.
May I know the name of the exchange you mentioned? I have not received the same email from several large exchanges. If the procedure is still normal then I would also be interested, what happened before is an unnatural way in which holders are directed to store ETC in certain wallets like Agharta, and then trap them with phishing which takes the user's private key.

Only those who are too in haste to make money by any means necessary will fall for these tricks, if you can relax and do your own digging you will easily detect if any fork is real or fake, falling victim to these scam is nothing but stupidity
Right, I think everyone has been a victim of scam, so for now people have started to be smart in seeing things and will not be in a hurry again to take an opportunity or make further steps, because it will be very painful if we continue fall victim to scam.

That's why it's better to think many times not before believing on that fork things since it has been abused by now since they know ETH is so famous and good thing ETC team give this a warning to give a heads up for those people who seeks for fork coins.

Better if we go to ETH directly or spend sometime especially now with BTC.

How scammers on the internet are obviously very many ways one of which is with the info you provide at this time so if we want to participate in some important events especially Hardfork then we should make sure whether the developer of one of these tokens will indeed do the hard work now, well if indeed they have given an appeal not to follow it, we better just ignore it and if there are some who have entered into the scam quickly get out of there before it's too late.

Just to make sure that we avoided this kind of scam, we must make sure that the announcement is from the project developer themselves.  Any fork that is not from the developer simply tells us that it is not that project and there is a huge possibility that it is there to hack our addresses since we need to access our old address with ETC on it to claim the token of that forked.  And lots of holders fell into that.
Even handing out private key is already spells an obvious scam in my mind. If there's hard fork I don't really care but just waiting for it to land to my address just like usually and I don't need to recklessly give away my private key like that, but not all of crypto enthusiast are tech savvy so I guess this announcement might be the best course of prevention from people falling into this scam.

ETC team and developers did well by mentioning this stern warning promptly its up to hodlers to comply to the warning else they would lose their  hard earned investment to scammers and hackers, some hodlers due to greediness would defies this warning believing  the hard fork is real thus exposing their key addresses to the hackers.

Yeah, unfortunately people still fall for these.

Just make sure that you use your common sense. If anyone asks for your private key, 99% of the time they're not doing it out of good faith. Private keys aren't needed in order to send/receive transactions and anyone that is trying to mislead you into believing otherwise is definitely not a legitimate character.

This does not just apply for ETC either, it's for all altcoins.

Since anyone can fork any coin at their own pleasure we just need to be vigilant before joining and claiming hardfork coins. The ETCV scam was really the classic example of this fake hardfork and will not be the last.

I just saw a tweet by Cointelegraph whereby Ethereum Classic team warns the public about an upcoming potential hard fork scam on Ethereum classic  (the real hard fork has already been achieved on January 12th). Here is the link 🔗 https://twitter.com/Cointelegraph/status/1216692633638064129?s=19

Last year I saw similar hard fork scams like ETCV (Ethereum Classic Vision) asking people to put their private key on a scam wallet in order to claim their hard fork tokens while holding ETH. Now scammers take advantage of hard forks and come up with similar scams.

Guys let's be wise, common sense is not common. Also greedy people are more prone to such scam plots.
I have also known about ETCV, it's easy to recognize it's a scam when it asks for private keys and unknown information, but there are still hundreds of people who ignore it when participating in the campaign. bounty of ETCV

about hardfork coins, use trusted sources from the official website or twitter, telegram, don't believe in non-official sites because of the risk of large fraud, so you must be careful and always check something from the official website of a coin project

Scammers are always trying to find ways to fool innocent investors and if anyone jump too soon then they will loose their coins, the same happened with bitcoin forks too as there were many scam wallets during that period and once you enter the private key to redeem the coins and if you have kept the original coins then everything is gone for good.
That's why it's really important to read more and observed before taking any actions, your knowledge can save you up with being victimized
by this kind of acts, scammers are waiting for their victims people who are unaware.
Always protect your assets by keep doing your research and be updated with the  team's progress.

Thanks for the quick notification @OP. i remember i also saw this Ethereum Classic Vision hardfork and initially i thought it was legit as the bounty campaign was done by several participants in here until later on they came up with the plan to swap.  Right then i advised myself and a couple of friends that this is a total scam and they should never oblige to such tricks. it's good the Ethereum Classic team have come officially to speak against this issue. I hope newbies don't get caught in this scam though Embarrassed

Private keys and mnemonic phrases should be handled carefully.
And if in any time you need to put your private key to claim the forked coin, be sure to empty the coins on address associated with the private key and transfer them somewhere safe.
You can never be all sure by what you are doing and a small mistake can cost you a lot.

mostly very greedy people and fall into such traps. I knew from the very beginning that ETCV was originally some kind of scam but I couldn’t immediately understand how they would cheat people and then it turned out that they just wanted to scam everyone by taking private keys. how stupid a person should be to send someone his private key from a wallet with money. it's very strange
What can we expect on people these days? they never change their perception when it comes to money that's why the end up feeling remorse because they don't analyze that their greediness will give them nothing. It's just making their situation worst, they don't realize that scammers will always look for opportunity to deceive them. It's the reason why we should be cautious and attentive because we don't know people's true intention, you can't just trust and believe anyone with your money because there is a huge possibility that they will used it to deceive you knowing that it can be beneficial to them. Particularly these days that scammers are getting wiser to the point that you can't determine which is legit or not, it's the reason why researching is recommended. People should learn from this kind of incident so they will not end up blaming anyone or anything because of their own stupidity.

thank you for the info, fork has indeed become an important part of a coin that will reach new developments and to make prices go higher. but it is indeed vulnerable to scams, because forks can be a tool for scammers to get their personal benefits. so we must follow the official info from the team, and follow the development of the fork.

ETCV mentioned by OP actually did Bounty here on Bitcointalk, wonders shall never end. We just have to be careful with all these hard forks here and there, especially when it entails importing private keys or mnemonic phrase or keystore to the hardfork wallet. Well, I think such scams will affect only gullible people who are new to technical aspect of crypto and also the greedy as mentioned. It's wise to check official news before trying to take advantage of any hard fork. By the way, some hard forks are just to improve existing features and not create an entirely new coin.

This is what i don't like from the existence of the hardfork coin. I remember the bitcoin forks have made so many people have lost their mind to join in anything that will give them a new hardfork coin.
It looks like that not so many people are getting lured to that scam coin caused by people have become even smart.

The problem is how to make a major awareness to make all of the people will change their minds about the hardfork as the hardfork is not generating a new coin again right now.

I have already seen scam attempts in previous ethereum hard forks.
Particularly in Istambul and constantinople.
When there are possibilities, scammers come, and the weakest and inexperienced are punctually hit.
We can defend ourselves just improving our know-how and studying more and more and more

Thanks for this info, someone mentioned another ETC hard fork on telegram when I know it has already been done, I was just confused today. I was even hoping to take advantage of the FA and buy some ETC. I wonder when these scammers will rest, don't they get tired of several scam techniques?

for fraud we really need to think more logically, if to get a coin from hardfork must provide a private key then I think that's a big fraud, and so far the ETC team has provided wise information. with this maybe people who read it will be better able to secure themselves from fraud that will be made.

You should change the title to Potential scam because of ETC hardfork. ETC did do the hardfork and it's not entirely a scam, the article is talking about the potential scam that will happen or might happen because of this hardfork. Be wise in choosing a word because it will mislead people if you do not use it appropriately.

Thanks, in essence I'm just trying to say people should be vigilant and not fall prey if they come across such hard fork scams. I understand the real Agharta hard fork was already successful on ETC blockchain on January 12th. Actually when I created the topic, I intended to write EAgharta ETC hard fork is scam but I omitted EAgharta. Well thanks again, I've edited the topic.
