It looks like selling your crypto for money when they are profitable is more safer than holding them for long, my point is only very few coins are worth holding for many years, if you still doubt about this go on coinmarketcap and look at most coins that came into this world in 2018 many of them have no volume again, the shocking one to me is gowithmi, a project that my elder brother praised so much at the time but today it's volume is not up to 50k, many projects will face same fate, be smart
yhup sometimes we need to be smart when it comes choosing a crypto project to hold especially for long term, because to be honest not all can guarantee a good return after all and not all coin in the market can last long like bitcoin and ethereum and that's the sad fact.

Because imagine i have different coins in my lost wallet  way back 2017 and they all have good volume and value, and now i noticed most of them are shitcoins..

Yes both Etherium and Bitcoin are king of marketcap. All altcoin are live until  these two has value in market.
Recently PolkaDot is also making big chain and in future it will gain also value like Etherium but it will take time. I  am holding only Etherium for now and will Buy more when market down

Apparently, these huge numbers of projects that exist in the market make people become lazy to find what is the best projects for investment, they'd rather choose those who would offer great rewards. But unfortunately, mostly it happens they fall into the wrong one. That is going to realize that no other great projects for investment aside from Bitcoin and ETH, some might reconsider but OP was right, we have to focus on the top projects if we seek for a profit assurance.
If they are lazy to search or do research on those projects, they will not be able to get great rewards but instead, they will get scammed. Yes, by focusing on top projects like bitcoin, ethereum, bnb and others, we have a high probability of profit. But even so, we still have to analyze when to buy those top coins because the price will continue to change. So that is why we really need to give a big portion to bitcoin, ethereum and bnb.
That will always be the case, no time to DYOR, then expect less profits or worst being scammed at all and lose all the penny you have. Investments have all its risks, so if we can't manage to lessen the risk, better yet stay away from investments. However, there are certain projects that are of high risks but the returns is definitely huge. I'm talking of bitcoin and ethereum as they never fail us from earning decent amount of income every time their new ATH is reached. Their top on the market list so there is a big assurance that prioritizing them in our portfolio will make us highly profitable in the long run.

you are right ETH and BTC are the best if it comes with long term investment considering their trading volume that’s the biggest compared with other but if there is any altcoins that you think really have potential in the long term I think
they are also worth holding because sometimes their ROI could easily surpass all these bigger altcoins with significantly higher market capitalization.
thats also the reason so many people are managing their risk of investment, basically putting the bigger investment in major altcoins and the smaller investment in rather risky investment for boosting their profits.
if you are good at managing your investment you could easily balance it out and get the best profit and also stays low in risk I guess.

Winding down.
My asset allocation Bitcoin accounts for 80% of the total assets, I rely on luck for some altcoins, and I will put all real investments in Bitcoin.
That is a good way to maximize your profits with bitcoin and to lessen the risk investing in altcoins. Bitcoin has been hitting the highest market demand so investing in it for long term could only mean huge profits in the end. As well as ethereum, its investment potentials can never be underestimated because it has multi purposes. One can act as money, and as a good store of value. And the fact that it has the most secure blockchain network that makes it more reliable to invest.

Long term hodl = winner.
So many times the time has proven that if the long term holders will always become the winner even in the various tokens. Adding more space for ethereum and bitcoin are good but i must remind you that you will get less profit for that. It's caused by ethereum and bitcoin have big capitalization and it can grow even slowed compared with the tokens with small marketcap.
The fact that if bitcoin and ethereum very suitable for the big entities but it's not for the small traders like us.

Of course, Bitcoin and Ethereum are the best cryptocurrency that deserve short-term and also long-term investments. They have strong value and support, including strong trust from the comunity. We also have seen their progress from zero to hero, they can survive from the very dropped bottom in the previous bearish era.

About the other projects?
Hemm, maybe there are several altcoins that also deserve for the long term inevstment, but it is litle bit trciky because having higher risks than BTC and also ETH. Moroeve rof they are new coins with big hype, I will never think save them as long holding.

For me, the most promising and potentially also give worthy coin for long term holding for several years of course:
1, Bitcoin
Then, followed by Ethereum and also BNB
The three coins really deserve it. And they are in my portfolio. although right now, their prices are all still going down, I am not doubtful if someday they will rise up again to pass their current ATH. I will let them be in my wallet and wait for their rising up again.

But, for other altcoins? Well, this may have bigger risks than oters. Even we are choosing the altcoins that may have string fundamentals, sometimes, they will be left behind with something new and more promising. That is why for other altcoins, I ma not sure enough to hold them for long term investment. I wil better to take profits enough after several percentage, no regret for this.

I know everyone has differnets trategy and just cosndier what best for you.

Bitcoin and ethereum are a priority for most people especially those who have been in the industry for a long time, and are definitely the preferred choice for filling more of their portfolio to prioritize over other coins.
and just like me because we already know the tracks of both especially in the long run so that the results don't disappoint, it's better to have coins that we usually use including top coins and also promising ones than to try new coins that we don't know the results.
Another good reason to pick bitcoin and ethereum is that while some newbies are looking for 10x profits or even higher, which is a lot more than what bitcoin and ethereum can give, they can give smaller but more consistent profits, and while this may seem to some as a disadvantage, it is not, after all in traditional markets earning something like 10% per year is already hard enough, and bitcoin and ethereum can give you way more profits than that for a similar risk, which means that if you can keep your investment for a long time then you will earn a lot more money than what you can get from traditional markets.

I know that there are a lot of bitcoin enthusiasts out there and also here in this forum who are saying that very cryptocurrency except bitcoin is basically a shit-coin. I don't really agree with such statements as i think that even new and upcoming projects can be very worthwhile to invest and to hold for a long time. Of course if you invest in such new projects the risk of losing all your money is way way higher in comparison to an investment into BTC so the first promise should always be to only invest money that you can afford to lose and to not invest into meme-coins of course because 99% of them will be dead in a few months.

The fact that there is no certainties in crypto, so investing comes with risks. Do not limit yourself on looking the project's present potentials, focus more on the development it will create in the future. Thus investing not only for today, but more on for future goals. And based on my experience, there are a lot of coins in the market that look so profitable, but later on their value starts to be worthless as the market demand changes. So better stick with established coins that keep dominating the market, bitcoin and ethereum could be on top of that.
Yes, that is what is called an investment. Most people try to invest but choose the wrong projects because they don't try to look for projects that can grow in the future. We already have a lot of coins in the market and I think that's more than enough for us to invest in. In addition, the risk of investing in a new project will be greater because we do not know how the project will turn out in the future. Because of the uncertainty factor in crypto, we need to anticipate choosing the right coin to invest and in this case, bitcoin will be more suitable to be used as the main investment.
Apparently, these huge numbers of projects that exist in the market make people become lazy to find what is the best projects for investment, they'd rather choose those who would offer great rewards. No doubt,  we've witnessed same fate for several projects, especially those that were in the space some years back I recall a project like hydro, iconomi and several others who have become a shadow of themselves. The list for failed projects is endless and the best we can do is hope that the projects that we invest into, stands the test of time.
option to stick around as you stated, maybe not having to be at the same point to keep waiting for surprising things to happen to the tokens you mention while new projects always sweeten every event. why don't you try participating in a new project?
I also agree with @kentrolla above, his analysis is quite good and you can also prepare some of the commodity assets he mentioned such as Eth, sol, bnb, there and others
Participating in a new project needs extra careful to select the project because we do not know their future. Maybe it is okay if we want to invest in a small amount but to invest more money, that will need more analysis if that project is good or will stop the development. It is better to invest in those coins that have already proven as good coins than invest in new ones. But do not forget to analyze the coin before buying the coins to know when to buy the coins.

I would definitely agree.

As with all investment, you would want to diversify into a market index which is weighted primarily based on market cap.

ETH and BTC aren't going anywhere, and BTC is actually becoming quite underrated in my opinion due to the fact that people seem to neglect the institutional interest that it has received. Some alts are quite undervalued and not worth the risk in my opinion.

There are many coins that have brought us profits from 2018 to now, BTC and ETH are always my priority for owning crypto, and it also ensures a certain risk in this market. I have seen many trends and the success of many projects, but in the case of BTC and ETH, it is always something to start with in this market.
BTC and ETH have been around for a long time in the crypto space so people who still believe in the two coins still have a chance to make huge profits this year too because if you ever bought both at the lowest price point during the correction, then right now. I've been able to sell it for a very good profit. So obviously BTC and ETH are two coins that are very often profitable for everyone in the crypto space.
Many times, we only look at the profit without paying attention to the risks encountered. This market has a lot of opportunities, and when the opportunity comes to us, let's cherish it. I have always liked to hold BTC long term and use ETH very often on the network, these seem to be pricey inaccessible to the uninitiated and all see attractive returns from altcoins. Where BTC has completely differentiated itself from the market, and so has ETH, it has taken the lead in solving the problems BTC faces, I personally have a lot of faith in ETH 2.0, which will change the whole point of view. people with it.

We have learnt this from a lot of experience and wrong decisions we have taken, Bitcoin and ETH should be the largest reserve in our portfolio since we can bank on these coins anytime but we also need to consider other top altcoins as well like BNB, SOL and ADA to name a few. When it comes to new project we cannot blame all the projects because sometimes it's the dev teams fault or sometimes they don't sustain due to low volume exchange they choose for listing and there was a coin named Policypal which had really good roadmap and it's ICO was sold-out in just 38 seconds but it couldn't survive because they choose low volume and bot infested exchanges.

I totally agree, Bitcoin is like the “special” king of the market - the place where every bull run trend originates… meanwhile, let's not forget the king of DEFi and the most important component to the coin altcoin direction - ETH.  I'm also adding BNB to the long term now… Some people usually analyze altcoin bull run positions for layer2 but I guess they'll know what really matters most.

And I think, especially for this year BTC and ETH will give me profit compared to if I keep it in Alts. Look at the weather right now mate, war and world economic inequality are brewing, and I know that the investment climate is down, so BTC and ETH are yearly investments that make sense to me.

I don't agree with that.
Because not all coins can be averaged only for the short term.
Those that last at least more than a year are good enough to invest in.
Apart from ethereum and bitcoin there are also other good coins like tron, Sonala, BNB, matic.
In my opinion, making bitcoin and ethereum just 2 coins that are good for the long term is less effective.
when we make these two coins long term, when the price is too high we are too late.
There are still coins on coinmarketcap growing well, it's just that they have a long development and lack of community support.
Their current price is still cheap, I believe they are at least in the top 100 of coinmarketcap.

As far as I know most of them go with altcoins only to become super rich in a real quick time which logically doesn't work, yes there are many who doesn't go with btc and eth as the price is already in high. Long-term holders doesn't even care if the price goes up or down as they already plan and invest but this doesn't work with the trader's as they go most of the time with short trades but on the technical analysis.

bitcoin and ethereum are indeed very good coins to hold, short or long term. Personally, I think that these two coins are the most potential coins to own, and have the least risk compared to the two coins, therefore, I feel that if the most space in the portfolio is filled by bitcoin and ethereum it
very good. Despite that, other popular altcoins are also pretty good to hold on to, although not quite as good as the two coins.
However, many people think that other altcoins are investments that can be used as a stepping stone to increase the value of assets quickly. it's not wrong, it's just that the risk could be greater. other than that, why people still choose other altcoins because they are cheap. however, if you want to try a bigger risk, other altcoins can be an option in our portfolio, but for long-term investments, bitcoin and ethereum are highly recommended to have more amounts than others.

There is no doubt that BTC and ETH both are much capable to give a decent amount of profit if we could able to buy these coins on right time but expecting good profit with these two coins requires huge investment in them which is not affordable for many people that's why they're not able to add BTC and ETH in their portfolio so they have only one option left which is investing in quality and affordable altcoins like Matic, Cardano, XLM etc.

everyone is smart enough to know this. that's why altcoins released today are hard to develop. Today's investors/traders rely more on big coins like ethereum, bnb, or bitcoin to fill their portfolios. and if you asked everyone today what coins they're holding, probably almost all of them would be bitcoin and ethereum or some other big altcoin.

BTC and ETH are indeed very worthy to always be on the list of our crypto portfolio. These two types of crypto will always be safe even if they are held for a long time.
You can compare how much they are worth now (2022) with what you saw in 2018.
Only BTC and ETH have been able to survive despite the many new coins coming into the crypto space.

Currently, many old projects have been delivered by investors, especially taem who manage projects because they cannot compete with new projects that are currently developing so fast that many old projects are lost on the exchange because trading volumes have slumped, so to invest in old projects just choose potential coins so as not to experience losses when the project is no longer in run, And we should know that crypto competition is getting higher.

I think so too. coins that we get whose fundamentals are still unclear or do not have a history, it is better to sell them immediately when they make a profit.
When compared to bitcoin and ethereum of course they are more powerful, keeping them is really worth it.
it's just that I have a little confusion, if we only have a little capital to trade, will it be profitable to keep bitcoins for a long time when the bitcoin price is very high now?
this is what makes me think at least even small altcoins need to be taken into account to be able to generate and increase capital.

So far I have been monitoring some of the coins on https://coinmarketcap.com I see that altcoins are already very much traded in the crypto market. I myself have also concluded that every altcoin is not profitable if it is held for too long because altcoins in general will have fantastic prices when they are first launched and over time the price of these coins will decrease in price because investors have moved to coins that are new and still popular in the crypto world.
That's why we can't get profits continuously because every day and every month there will be new projects that are more popular so that the old coins will be left behind.

If I were you, I would store everything in bitcoins.
I understand $LINK and $ADA do have good qualities as the top altcoins on coinmarketcap.
However, the market looks different from what we saw from the previous year, the market seems to make bitcoin have a high price development.
at 1400 euros that's enough to keep a few bitcoins at least until we know when the altcoin season returns. will definitely make us believe in altcoins like $LINK or $ADA and others.

If you want to hold it for a long period, only bitcoin should you give a big place in your portfolio while other coins you can sell when the price increases drastically. Likewise with Ethereum or BNB or other potential coins because after those coins reach the highest price, bitcoin will experience a correction and we have seen what happens to bitcoin. The bitcoin price has fallen by half from its last high, while the altcoin price has also fallen. Many of those altcoins have fallen drastically to their lowest prices.

Don't expect too much on new projects because not many of those new projects can improve drastically like the old coins already on the market. Only a few new projects can rise high and survive in the market. If you invest in a new project, don't spend too much money and instead allocate that money to bitcoins.

I do try to keep as much of my portfolio as possible in these two as well. However with the increasing amount of transaction fee for both (coming back to btc now thanks to bech32) its really a hard thing to use them. I try to buy and invest into things that I would be willing to use, not things that I would simply invest just because I believe they will go up. If I do not want to use it, then I do not want to invest into it. BTC-ETH could be the two that are exceptions, because they are number one and two, but thats it, they do not have the biggest pie anymore for me. While others went up higher, I just let them become bigger than these two, and did not rearrange my situation.

That depends on the development progress that already made. I should remind you that even the big token or coin can go down with the goes of time. Did you remember with the masternode coin and yeah this kind of coin have so many coins in the crypto ecosystem and with only a few years already passed and almost all of masternode coins already wiped out from the market as new tokens and coins have been taken the majority of top spots in the CMC.
I remember that golden days of masternode coin and this time it's just only the name that newbies very unfamiliar with it. BTC and ETH are totally good coins but less room to growth means we will get less
I know that not so many projects can success and this is how crypto is playing today. When you didn't get hype and you will be end

The coinmarketcap historical page is proof of this. https://coinmarketcap.com/historical/ :) You can see everything that happened since 2013. Thus, you can have an idea about what may happen next. :) Except for Bitcoin and Ethereum, I don't see any permanent coins (BNB can be added to this shortlist). It is necessary to use IDO and IEO platforms to earn money. In order not to lose money, it is necessary to be a Bitcoin and Ethereum holder. Good luck to everybody.

This has been discussed at length many times, if you are planning to become a trader then as long as you have a solid money management strategy then you can invest in a great deal of coins and see if your strategy is profitable when trading them, however if your intent is to become an investor and hold your coins for the long term then there is only one coin in which you can invest and that is bitcoin, even ethereum which is a good coin does not deserve to be in the same level as bitcoin as ethereum could at some point be replaced by a better coin, while the chances this happens to bitcoin are incredibly low.

Of course, both BTC and ETH are prime movers, so you really need to hold them in order to make huge profits in the future. 2018 was really bad for the altcoin market, even ETH's lowest low was in 2018, but they have gain so much and for sure if you have stayed with them, you are very profitable even today, even if the price is way below their last ATH. And yes, maybe your brother just hold some shitcoin that's why it didn't do well, so we really need to invest on coins in the top 10-20 marketcap.

I have never heard about the project, gowithmi, that the OP mentioned. But it is true that a lot of alts and tokens created way back in 2018 were long dead already. Very few are still surviving but definitely BTC and ETH are the frontrunners in this market. Because for one, the dev team behind ETH is really doing their job to innovate this network. It may have high gas fees but the team is in continuous pursuit to improve their services, whereas, most tokens were already abandoned because the main interest of their dev team was to rip off those buyers as much as they can and disappear into thin air once they pocketed the money.

It's going to repeat from time to time.

And one day soon there will be fewer cryptocurrencies in the market and the majority that stands long together with bitcoin might have not been seen yet and the rest of the top are likely to stay.

It's both safe, to sell at profit and to hold if you want to.

I'm doing both, selling when I'm in profit but I'm also holding as you've said, the biggest part of portfolio because I know that it's the best to hold on the market.

Gowithme was just another ico hype project, with its broad concept and the team where unable to develop it accordingly, am surprise you are bringing that project up because the hype didn't last for too long before the value start depreciating and the community went suddenly quite, it seem the team already had their pocket filled and have no need to further the development of the project,
The success of a project depends on the determination of the team, don't expect to see volume when there is nothing new coming from the team.
Don't worry as it looks like he is not shilling that dead project because he already highlighted bitcoin and etherium on his title and on his main post. Only few projects that are from the year 2018 have survived this far, I think that is because there are now newer chains other than etherium.

There are even old projects that are based on etherium but are now moving to binance chain and polygon because they see that newer chains are now popular. I think the high fees in etherium is also the reason for this. If the team is willing, they will do anything to keep the project alive. We need to support projects like that, that are striving aside from investing in bitcoin and etherium.

Totally depends on the development of token. If you are holding garbage tokens for long term and that was a big mistake that you have made. The different thing when you are holding the good tokens. You must have learned if you are holding the right token or coin for long term and it can also make you become the next millionaire. Selling your legit token will not always become the best option.

my point is only very few coins are worth holding for many years, if you still doubt about this go on coinmarketcap and look at most coins that came into this world in 2018 many of them have no volume again,
They have been made as money grabber by scammers and then expecting those garbage tokens with very bad fundamental for long term was a big mistake. I think that anyone know this so well.

The golden time for gowithmi already ended and so far this token can't even deliver the product and investors have been disappointed with it.

Holding both is more than enough and you just need to be a long term holder. For me both are the best, although personally I still prefer bitcoin 70% of the portfolio and the remaining 30% on Ethereum. Even so, it is undeniable that the ones who survive are the ones who have had great confidence levels over the years.

Surely they are a pair everyone should have. You may be daring to take risks but you should still have a sizeable portion of stablished and trusted coins and Bitcoin and Ethereum are in the forefront. Both are community developed and arguably two of the most decentralized coins, there's a unbroken line of trust involved with both of the names and both in general are in upward trend. They would buffer and strengthen the portfolio in any trend.

just DYOR first before investing in new kind of coin

this is definitely crucial, not invest in coins that you did not proper research, or you will be rugged
it happens all the time, you sometime invest in coin and succeed, but usually you will lose your money without analysis

ETH and BTC should be least risky solution for investment, but probably lead lower profits than other coins, where risk is higher, but reward bigger as well

From which side do you judge if ETH and BTC the risk is small if we invest.
Do you see from the high price or from the other side.
But when it comes to altcoins, yes, the risk is big because the more we invest, the more profit opportunities for us as well as if we lose, we will lose big.

You are definitely right. There are many projects I traded back in 2017-2018 and did pretty well back then, especially the 2017 bull market and I would have thought that these projects will continue to do good into the future but this wasn't the case, most of them are long dead or almost forgotten with low volumes. I strongly believe for long-term investment, Bitcoin and Ethereum have proven to be the best choice.

I don't understand your comparison honestly, Ofcourse there will be no risk when you are selling assets in profit. It's a simple take profit, take loss and HODL in trading which is hodling is the only one incorporated with more risk. A balance portfolio should really allocate more on huge marketcap coin such as Bitcoin and ETH but still it depends on the trader preferences in terms of investment. There's an aggresive traders which usually choose huge risk but only use small amount of money as capital, There target is to gain profit in a short period of time to chase the benefits of crypto hype.

Yes I agree with you.
There is the conservative trader who is looking for more time, just like what we do here in cryptocurrency trading. The only difference is that we don't put all our eggs in one basket. We try to offset this by buying a huge amount of coins with large market capitalization but still having a portion dedicated to small coins in the market for additional income and earning due to its volatility.

it’s called natural selection if most of the projects didn’t make it to be the best among the best and sooner and later their volume decrease and will gets delisted eventually.
most of major altcoins that have relatively big market capitalization could still be holding on for long and definitely won’t go down in terms of volume that easily but most of the projects that are having relatively low market capitalization and trading volume
even after quite the moment from they are being listed, definitely have bigger chance of having its fame fading and eventually being left out, I agree, investing in major coins is a lot more guaranteed but definitely remember that the ROI will also be different.

Yes, bitcoin and ethereum should have the largest portion in our portfolio in addition to having other investment coins. Other coins can indeed rise high and provide big profits but when compared to bitcoin, the profit is still greater in bitcoin, but it depends on how many bitcoins you have.

But gowithmi platform? What's that? If it's a new project, I hope you can be more careful if you want to invest in that project. It's better if you invest in bitcoin, which can clearly provide a large profit.

I agree with you,
indeed, among the 5 biggest coins in the coin marketcap it is the benchmark, I dominate for long-term trading / invest (hodl) between btc and eth I prefer to use bitcoin with the network, of course it allows cheaper fees (affordable)
what platform is gowitmi bro?
for exchanging or saving interest-bearing assets such as defi and so on? Are there any problems that you feel outside of the advertising words on the platform's website?

Shit happens, the strongest coins that I've seen since 2017 and still have good volume plus liquidity today are mostly those that rise on their own, no ICO no IEO or what so ever, they rely on the support of the community, doge coin is a good example and even some forks of BTC, all these new altcoins that are getting released today are not to be rely on, be careful which one you decide to buy and keep for holding sake they might not even survive a year or two.

I totally agree with your opinion, because this really happened with crypto, there were a lot of altcoins that were popular back then and today are out on the exchange market and some don't have a lot of volume and prices have dropped drastically. so in my opinion to make long-term investments must have a grace period and the maximum amount of profit.

Any specific coin that you want to touch on? Not just, in general, the "2018" thing that you are talking about. I think the best way to be on top of the market is with BTC and ETH, that's for sure. Continuously buying BTC and ETH is not bad as long as you believe in the project and you won't touch it anytime or something.

I haven't seen gowithmi or anything related to that project. What exactly happened to your brother's investment?
