for some reason, if old dag files exist when i start ethash, it has 0H/s and tends to hang/crash the moment it gets new work from the pool

is there a reason for this? i considered adding a rule to the batchfile to delete all pre-existing DAGs at launch

The generation of the DAG file is a very slow process if you use a slow CPU. So it is better not to delete the DAG.

takes <5 minutes per dag - not that bad assuming you plan to be mining for hours or days on end

For the Intel G1620, it take about 30 mins to generate one DAG. So it is better not to delete the right one.

You can also just select all those dag files (WHILE running ethminer) and delete them. Windows will tell you which ones are in use and cannot be deleted.

So you won't delete to much or leave to much on there Smiley

It is better to leave the last two DAG files. They will be used by the miner. You can delete the rest without problem.

Two file size which is the largest is the one being used and precomputed. So keep these two. You can safely delete others.

those that are needed will be recreated so delete only those that you don't need anymore, because they were used for other coin that run the same ethereum algo

You can safely delete all the DAG files but the latest - even if you delete them all, ethminer will create the latest, needed file itself from new
