Sharding could be a reality on the Ethereum blockchain sooner than later. According to developments from Ethereum hackathon event EthBerlin, longtime core developer Vlad Zamfir has made great strides in developing Ethereum’s sharding solution. In effect, he has programmed a proof-of-concept demonstrating that certain Ethereum shards are able to communicate on the blockchain.

In a conversation with Coindesk, Zamfir revealed that he coded the proof-of-concept with other developers including Tim Beiko and Steve Marx. But he admitted that it’s  “not even close” to being ready for prime time on the Mainnet. But what they’ve unveiled is the code that will be paramount when it comes time to integrate the game-changing technology of sharding on the Ethereum blockchain.

I think this is a welcome development to the cryptocurrency space, if this amazing sharding proof of concept consensus mechanism is implemented it will go a long way to solve the pending issue of scalability in the Ethereum blockchain. Thanks for the information.

I think next 6 to 9 months are very critical for eth developers if they are able to keep their word about their development goals and do successfully come with scaling and multiple upgrades then i think eth will really grow parabolically just like we have seen ripple geowing in last couple of days.

There are so many things, so many projects going on in parallel with the Ethereum blockchain, it's amazing... casper, sharding, plasma, ETH supply cap,...

But everything is still to come, experimental, and nothing seems to be in the production phase. Like in the case of sharding:

As Zamfir noted, however, there is currently a lack of a mechanism to send transaction fees and routing messages from one shard to another

And, it's like that, month after month. So, it makes me wonder, if they know what they are doing?

Yeah, I agree with you.

I see a lot of hype around ethereum casper and ethereum plasma. But they are still experimental, and not as close as Lightning Network , for example.

Lightning is almost the same as plasma, even the same creator. And I see no concrete advances in plasma, but I see on lightning.

These are good news that they are on track but waiting for years for an upgrade is long time.
That is  also reflected in ETH price  and it will struggle until some concrete results.

Exactly. They have to make a decision and go through the next phase of development if they want to be taken seriously.

Although, IMO the only sound consensus mechanism is PoW, as it is now. PoS and the other proposals are questionable, to say the least. They are certainly aware of this and they want to make sure there will be no screw ups.

If I remember correctly casper and sharding were combined and the development upgrade should take place end of 2018
and then postponed until 2020. These are good news that they are on track but waiting for years for an upgrade is long time.

Ethereum went into a recovery after his big fall. And the Ethereum community is constantly working. No matter what anyone says, Ethereum has a very large and powerful network. It would not disappear quite easily.

Blockchain Technology gives us a wide range of benefits that a centralised system cannot give. Here basically the blocks are listed on a decentralized platform. In cryptocurrency market, transactions can be performed within seconds with the help of blockchain system.

Sharding is an innovative strategy. Here the transactions would be more efficient and faster because the ethereum network would be divided into shards. Ethereum's sharding proof of concept might bring a revolutionary change in the market.

The concept of sharding in POC does sound interesting but at the same time we need to keep in mind that it is just in an experimental stage and nothing has been set to set to action yet.
