As I know Sharding and Casper were combined but the upgrades are postponed. This reflects on the price of ETH.
I think ETH will struggle until the scalability issue will not be solved.

Ethereum [ETH]’s scalability issues: What is the solution to break the 50,000 TPS barrier?

Quote
There have been a few proposed solutions to the scaling of the network, which include various features such as sharding and the development of Plasma. This brings the question to the minds of enthusiasts: What will drive the scaling of the Ethereum network?

Primary among the proposed solutions is sharding. Sharding is a concept derived from traditional databases, which breaks the data into pieces that can be stored on different servers.

Do you guys agree that sharding could be the scalability solutions for Ethereum?

I think it also involves a of risk like which node implements which shard and since blockchain works on trustless system, nodes will have to come up with a some proof to prove that they have done their share on their end or have completed the work on their part.
The scalability solution of ethereum is not only sharding, there was a lot of scalability solution just like raiden network. 50k TPS is so difficult to break it. just take a look on zilliqa and it has sharding blockchain and that will give you a lot of clue about how it works dude. It's working right now and that's a good idea to see that as an example to the future sharding of ethereum.
