If i understand it correctly ethereum is focusing on company's rather then being a true currency like bitcoin. But i can see it happen that ethereum will surpass bitcoin in price in the future because other company's will bring more value.

Yeah as I believe Etherium can get as valuable as Bitcoin, I doubt it can overcome it as the most famous brand out in the market.

ETH is quicker and more secured. Bitcoin will always be the first crypto in the world, but there are more trusted altcoins nowadays.

Cool article, interesting perspectives, always take these sorts of "philosophies" with a grain of salt, though. It's good to research and take in as many different perspectives as you can but ultimately no one can truly foresee the trajectory of any coins. Ethereum as a platform poses a lot of benefits for society that go beyond supporting a currency. As another post mentioned, the two coins are completely different in their purpose thus it's hard for them to really compete, not to mention we can't truly argue that we've seen the full potential of btc yet either. These are exciting times. Keep up on both eth and btc as much as you can and don't fear!

Cheers!

Thank you very much, I'll certainly looking forward to that, funny enough now I've looking around alt-coins too, can I ask you how can one profit from such currencies? Or should I make a new post? I'm aware of scans too... But the thought seems promising.

What do you guys think? Should we be looking forward to that in a near future?  Huh
3) Since we apparently have a tangent about Ethereum mining -- didn't they plan on getting rid of mining altogether and switch to PoS? I'm aware that they postponed the difficulty bomb, but it's still in the cards, is it not?

I could completely be convinced if I could understand how exactly can PoS discourage centralized cartels more than PoW, I swear I've been trying but I just can't grasp it...  Cry

It doesn't. To be fair, the case for PoS is energy savings, not improved decentralization. Seeing how PoS is likely to make centralization of both power and wealth worse by simply replicating the old system of gaining money by owning money, I personally don't have much love for PoS. But that's a different matter. Point being, be aware of future Ethereum milestones when planning to invest in Ethereum mining.

1) It's impossible to come to a solid conclusion about which coin will grow by how much -- or decline, for that matter.

2) Alts surpass each other all the time. Of course there's a certain psychological effect to being the king of the hill, but still: Except for FOMO, what difference does it make if some other coin turned out to be more profitable as long as you made a profit yourself?

3) Since we apparently have a tangent about Ethereum mining -- didn't they plan on getting rid of mining altogether and switch to PoS? I'm aware that they postponed the difficulty bomb, but it's still in the cards, is it not?

4) The platform argument is kinda silly. What's their definition of a platform? The internet is a platform. MySpace was a platform. Without proper context it's just as meaningless a term as "blockchain". Merely defining it as something that Amazon and Facebook have in common doesn't help much.

Surpassing bitcoin in terms of what? Both ETH and BTC are created for different purposes, ETH for decentralized applications and smart contracts, while BTC as a global borderless currency. It's quite pointless to compare both, as both can coexist.
He meant in the context of market cap and the no.1 coin title.

@OP - Crypto world is completely different and no one can predict what can happen tomorrow. You should always expect the unexpected.

It's so funny, often when I'm chatting I notice people recognise more "bitcoin" than "cryptocurrency" itself these days, it's like, the brand is so strong at this point that I can't help but to believe it will always be the #1 brand (like Coke and gold), unless we witness a twist this year...

By what I read it seems like he believes Bitcoin is gonna lose value and people are gonna switch the hype for Ethereum, making it "take Bitcoin's place", thinking again now, I don't know if he really understands how blockchains works...

As a beginner working towards buying an ASIC and still learning how to trade, the following article struck my mind:

https://hackernoon.com/ethereum-will-pass-bitcoin-in-2018-my-cryptocurrency-investment-portfolio-dcab52905bba

He is arguing that Ethereum is surpassing Bitcoin this year, even tho he seems to be a respectful writer hes far from being an expert, and medium is not a dedicated forum on the matter so I find hard to trust commentaries and articles alike, one of his statements are:

Quote
Amazon is a platform. Facebook is a platform. Platforms dominate the internet. As we’ve seen from Ethereum’s creation of the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) platform, platform coins will dominate the blockchain coin as well. We’ll see many cryptocoins repositioning themselves as platform coins, especially starting in the second half of 2018 and into 2019 when many smaller, more niche coins start to flame out. Based on my research, Ethereum is currently best positioned to win the platform war. Pure and simple. I may change my view in the next few months or quarters but for now Ethereum gets the majority of my money.

What do you guys think? Should we be looking forward to that in a near future?  Huh
