Do you have some significant reason to use desktop ETH wallet? If not then you can just use MyEtherWallet. There is no need to wait for a full sync to make anything with your ETHs. Just beware and don't get to phishing sites, that's all.

Sync with the light client, not a full-node. You'll end up most likely getting stuck with 100-300 blocks remaining if you go full-node.

Light sync takes like 1-2 hours.

you need at least a week if you want to run full node of mist wallet, for what exactly you need it ? cause you can use light version of it.
