Anything else like using the wi-fi mini PCI-e slot is generally not going to work out. Lots of laptop BIOS have a whitelist and I doubt you be able to get 1 GPU to work let alone 3+.

Well.... not necessary need thunderbolt to have an external GPU, those are for new laptops with new technology...
with Mini PCI-E you can install lot of devices with an adapter. Specially a GPU using EXP GDC

if it works for gaming, then works for mining. Keep in mind that it's 1 GPU only, I'm looking to attach a riser with 3 or 4 PCI-E 1x then hook up the 16x riser.
