lol Noooo you've got my comment all wrong Cheesy Its not about crippling LinuxCoin its more about versatility. Some may want a tiny OS just for mining, others may want music players and all the bloatware. Moving the packages to a repository and letting the user choose what he wants is where I want to be going Wink

When i started the project I was thinking along the lines of your first post. But I quickly realized that people wanted different features etc. Also I realized the potential of having a OS dedicated to bitcoin and its users.

0.2a is a compromise in the middle Cheesy But its still alpha, hence everything like GCC and subversion being on the ISO. Eventually I want to make this distro as light as possible Wink

Linuxcoin was also designed with the miner in mind. its WDM and everything has been selected because of its low system resource usage etc. It was as much I could get it down to without loosing functionality.

And I would like to see ATI follow the path of CUDA and have its GPGPU accessible without Xorg. i think the reason this hasn't happened already is that ATI like to keep there source code to themselves. It should be open source !! It will save them money in wages and improve their current drivers ten fold Wink

There's no music players or any of that. Nvidias drivers list their GPGPUs without xorg as a resource. ATI doesn't. You need xorg running to use ATI hardware. Linuxcoin is as striped down as your going to get I'm afraid. The extras only take up about 70mb most of the 700mb is taken up by dependencies and tools nesecerry to mine / trade bitcoin.

Well that's a small lie lol it is a bot bloated with gcc and other bits and bobs but eventually I will move to a repository and the user can choose what they need and don't. This should bring Linuxcoin down
to around 500mb.

Would be nice to see ATI also make their GPGPUs accessible without a WDM though Cheesy

You need Xorg to use ATI GPGPU's. Try LinuxCoin.
this time - yes.
thats WHY im asking about ways/workarounds around this.
native OpenCL support in kernel ? like Nvidia SW egineers downe with porting CUDE support in Linux kernel[4x boosting in dm-crypt speed in result. i guess in Amd GPU case, difference can be even striking Tongue]

i kewn that fork/read that thread, and thats nice attempt to make newbie-friendly distro for miners[and im probably buy this usb-flash later], but thats about ordinary, full-scaled distro, with xOrg, DE, browsers, music players, and rest bloatware.
there im talk about ways to create native OpenCL implementation w/o xorg. or at least to cripple distro to something like kernel-xorg-miner -similar scale.

is that possible to use something ultra-tiny, like DSL or TinyCore for mining, ie, bring OpenCL alive WITHOUT XOrg ? with directFB[hello, Linux kernel !]
or use lightweight distro, like Slackware based LiveCD's ?[SLAX]

p.s.
sorry 4 newb question.
