Solution to what?  Being anonymous?
Well, it depends. Either that or for keeping things private which is what Alliance or WASTE are good for. You aren't really anonymous when using waste. It's more like a virtual private network where data can be transferred in a secure (encrypted) way, but someone outside knows whom you are connected with and can possibly analyze the (encrypted) data you transfer. So the attacker is for example able to guess what you are transferring by looking at how much traffic you generate. Also you are not really anonymous to others inside the network, because you connect to them. If you create an open network that everyone can join you loose all benefits.

Isn't usenet pretty much perfect for the use?  I mean you have a huge number decentralized servers everywhere,
Yes, but it depends on a lot of factors. First of all the admin of a server can always watch you and since data isn't encrypted (unless you encrypt postings) people watching know what you are downloading. Of course it's hard to have an eye on all servers, but your ISP knows everything and the server operator too. Also messages you write can usually be used to identify you if you don't taker lots of precautions. You can operate your own server of course, but this partly takes away the benefits of Usenet, especially when you make a private one. Also it can be costly if you have to store and transfer all the data.

Quote
usenet was the internet before HTML.
I have been using Usenet for a long time and I don't know why people always say things like that. Historically you didn't even need to have an actual internet connection to access them. HTML is a markup language. I guess you mean HTTP which was preceded by Gopher, also younger than the Usenet, which you can already guess by the fact that NNTP is described in RFC 977 while Gopher is first described in RFC 1436.

Quote
It has many uses besides filesharing, also have encryption via SSL to hide from nosy eyes.  No it isn't perfect, but authorities are always go gonna after low hanging fruit, cause they are the easiest to get to.
You are right with that, but using other protocols, like Freenet (FMS provides an NNTP interface, but there are many other applications), I2P (Forums, Bittorrent, ... ) provide all the benefits while just being a little slower. Also they are easier accessible. Have you ever tried to find an open news server that provides access to binaries? And if you roll out your own with your own groups and stuff, even if you have the money for server, storage and traffic it can be hard to find someone to pull from it.

Again, I think you are right with what you say and NNTP is very nice, but most things can be done easier especially if you want to remain anonymous and/or secure. NNTP wasn't designed for these things. In a lot of Newsgroups nobody will talk to you if you don't use your real name (or what looks like one).

On Usenet one depends on server operators so it isn't really a solution if you want to hide traces.

No that's a pretty good break down of it.  Stick with usenet.

usenet is for old people!   I am on that IRC thingy with an fserve hosting my latest 20 mp3s.

Honestly though, if that is a good break down of it, then "I still don't get it", there must be some pretty bad files being shared if the paranoia is that high regarding said files.

I'm looking at Oneswarm right now, just based on something I already am kind of familiar with.  I am definitely missing something.   Who is the target audience for these type of file sharing programs?  I am probably misunderstanding, but it seems you would have to "know" people to access all the good files, which then negates the whole 'its anonymous' thing.   I am nearly 100% sure I am misunderstanding something here lol

@BitcoinPorn: You could use Oneswarm, Freenet, GNUnet, ... (see the link).

Darknets are good if you already have people you can trust. Since they have to trust in both their technical skills and that they won't turn on you this can be quite hard for most people.

I have a vast collection of files I am more than happy to share if I could understand the benefits of sharing via Darknet or WASTE or anything mentioned here.   I never want to know the people I am getting files from in the least, I just want good file information before I get said files.  Who is the target audience for these services over current file sharing methods?

Creating a Darknet with random people doesn't really make a lot of sense, as it will be an open/public net which is the opposite.

In a Darknet you need to trust other people so just peering with random people kinda defeats the purpose.

Hi,

is anyone willing to try to build up a darknet again?
I don't care about the network technology. Alliance, WASTE, DC++, anything is fine with me.

I have a new connection (DSL 32k) and something what seems to be a static IP.

Soooo, who's in ? Wink

I wouldn't really recommend using WASTE unless you want to contribute to it, as development is stalled.
But there are many alternatives.

Oh and one could also (ab)use Git for this stuff. Just setup a Cronjob to automatically get updates from others. It'd would also be easy to create a script, as there are nice interfaces for pretty much any language.

SmokeTooMuch, still interested, i have a large collection too, and i have it already installed just looking to set it up with someone =P
AllianceP2P or WASTE?
But as I see it, this whole Darknet thing only makes sense when we are a few people who start a network together.
The current state is this: Someone show's interest, after a few issues we connect, and then he doesn't show off anymore. Then after a few weeks the next one shows interest and it starts again.

For this to work we need a few more people to get it started.
(Alliance will also only work without dynamic DNS when there's atleast one known peer online who knows the IP adresses of the other peers afaik.)

Well, somehow I don't like Alliance anymore.
It's just too complicated to build a working network with people who aren't familiar with it.

I guess the best thing would be a DC hub with encryption.

Maybe I will workout a better solution for a filesharing darknet and post it here.

My code is QuVGs4RMxkBQ7Q, and I am asking 1BC for access to my Library of over 8,000 songs that is 40GB.

Also I will download a file via filehost or bittorrent and send it to you via Alliance for 1BC per 500MB. The upload will be capped at 100KB/s

Contact me in alliance.

Wouldn't it make more sense to get Bitcoin to work within any of the existing anonymous networks?
If you could use Bitcoins to pay for things in those networks I think you have a winner.

I didn't mean to hijack the thread though so I'll just leave you be. But if you know anything about projects of that kind, feel free to let me know.

"testing the internet" usually takes just a few seconds. Maybe your port isn't forwarded ?

And if you gave it a blank folder (no content).. what exactly should be hashed anyway ? Wink

EDIT: Also make sure to use SSL encryption !

You have been invited to a private Alliance network!

1. Download and run Alliance here:
http://www.alliancep2p.com/download

2. When Alliance starts it will ask you for a code. Enter this:
VK%a%h&GAiecyQ

This is my invite key (multiple uses possible).
I am using SSL encryption so PLEASE activate it (options -> security).
My port (TCP) is forwarded so connection should be possible. (You have to forward your port, too.)
I'm online for atleast the next four hours, so if anyone is interested feel free to add me

How would we go about this? I might be interested.

download the program: http://sourceforge.net/projects/alliancep2p

run the java .jar and do the setup instructions.

Click "add friend".  It will generate a special one-time code to add a friend.

Send me (or someone else) a private message with that code.

I am also not a big fan of F2F because when I am paranoid enough to use them I don't have enough people I could trust.

However, if you are interested in anonymous P2P I can recommend the Wikipedia article on this topic.

I didn't really expect much more but if we put it in relation with almost-full-speed f2f networks it's just no option for me.
I2PHex doesn't even connect to any host.
iMule has about 190 nodes now and yes torrents seem to be the most popular filesharing thing inside .i2p

If anyone's interested in a f2f filesharing network with me, here are some details:
- about 2 TB of content to share
- DSL 3000 connection, but will probably updated to DSL32k soon

can you recommend any filesharing service inside the i2p service ?
i heard about i2pshark a while ago, but not sure if its the best/most common solution.

EDIT: ok I gave i2p a try, but seriously, it's terribly slow.
I tried iMule, I2PHex and I2Psnark and I really prefer my darknet solution.

i'm actually not using i2p for filesharing myself (but for anon-webhosting),
I2Psnark is the build-in bt-client, that comes bundled with the node,
torrents are used most in I2P i'd guess, followed by iMule.

and of course it's terribly slow, it's speed will rise with it's userbase,
if your the only one using it, downloads will take forever,
if theres just >500users on iMule and only 2 of them got ur file
and those 2 set theyr connection to 64kbit/sec (which will then be spread into all network-traffic of that node),
then theres just a few kbits/sec left for you to suck on, what did u expect?

i dont like those closed networks,
maybe my definition of filesharing is just different.

i prefer "free for all" networks, like i2p,
combine it with whatever filesharing-client suits you best
and u'v got a nice, free p2p community that doesnt even have to worry about where to host its websites.

Hi,

I'm trying to find people for a F2F filesharing network for quite some time now, and I think here, in an forum with members who care about anonymity, I might think I could find some people who are interested in such a thing.

I prefer AllianceP2P for the software, because it has the ability to encrypt the traffic, is open-source and easy to use, but if you persist to use another software, feel free to tell me to use that instead.

Alliance is a private and secure place to share files and communicate with people you know. It is easy to use and free.

Technically Alliance takes the best parts of BitTorrent (advanced multi-source downloading), DirectConnect (community) and WASTE (security).

With Alliance users create their own networks. You can either start a new network or get invited into an existing network by another Alliance user.

Alliance is free and open source. It works on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Alliance is completely decentralized.

Encryption is an important part of Alliance. Robust encryption (AES over SSL) has been implemented and is available as an experimental option in Alliance. By default Alliance runs on a very simplistic encryption algorithm. Even with the simple encryption Alliance is more secure than normal P2P networks since you only connect to your trusted friends.
