Sure you can buy land from countries, that's what most people do to build a house. I own land, but if I call it a country and decide to have my own laws on it, don't pay taxes for it anymore and build something on it that isn't approved by the municipality.

Theoretically, the question is all about the price. There ought to be a difference between buy and BUY. No, we don't really buy "land" from governments, we buy the right to build a house on it. So how much more would be the price to pay if you wanted to buy out off the sovereignty of a nation some piece of land ? If I'm harsh I'd say the price depends on the strength of the military you could provide to protect that land.  Lips sealed

Buy Sealand and run your own anarchy.

That's what I thought of when I saw this post. Who owns Sealand nowadays?

Than I will pretty soon just lose it, and I don't think any country will sell you land and say "yeah, do what you want with it".

Making an artificial island in international waters would be a better solution.
And the South Pole still has unclaimed territory, so that would also be a solution.

Both require an insane amount of money though. Sad

Right, it turns out that almost EVERY piece of shallow water on this planet is owned by some country.
It's all because of "Exclusive economic zone" that stretches for 200 miles from the shore.

This leaves only incredibly deep oceans for a potential new country.

It seemed to me no land could claim it because it exceeds the <12 mile from any shore. The water is not to deep, so at first this seemed actually a pretty good idea to me.

Till I found this when reading the info on Wikipedia:

In January 2010, a licence to develop a wind farm on Dogger Bank was granted to Forewind Ltd, a consortium of developers. The wind farm is projected to develop up to 9 gigawatts of power, as part of a planned nine zone project of 32 gigawatts. Construction is scheduled to start around 2014 at the earliest.[4]

Doesn't this mean they already claimed it?

I think, that Dogger Bank would be a good location to start an anarchist country/society.
In it's shallowest place it's only 15m deep.

Does anyone know how much it'd cost to reclaim a land from a 20m depth?
Effectively to estimate a price per square meter of such an artificial island.
