That sucks. Did you recently change the permissions of your bitcoin folder, or run Bitcoin-QT as root/administrator?
That would limit Bitcoin-QT's access.

Hi,
What should I do? I'm guessing I can delete the block data and start over downloading the whole thing.
This should take me, well, forever. Anything else to do?
And why did this happen in the first place?
Win+R: explorer %APPDATA%\Bitcoin
don't kill wallet.dat (or buckup file move here):
delete all files in %APPDATA%\Bitcoin\
+ in , ,
don't delete folder inside, empty this.

I recently installed the latest Bitcoin client on the new computer. Synchronization took "only" about six hours.
However, Thanks to the developers for improvement.

Unfortunately, the best (and safest) is to download blockchain again, and be careful with your wallet file.
Also there are some torrent trackers where you can download much faster.
