I'm thinking of creating a physical family tree I could hold in my hands
However I would like to be able to pass it on, so information could be added on later (trough generations)
Any ideas how this could be done?  Undecided

From my experience, the best was to do this is to make family tree online, on specialized services (like myheritage).
In this way, many pother people can find you online, your possible relatives or descendants, your data will never be lost and your family tree anybody can edit (if they have some info about your family tree).

I know

but it's not a physical thing

and websites go down as fast as they go up

that's why I would like to make something that would last for generations

that's not what I'm aiming for, I'd like to write something about each member of the tree

a book would be nice, but there's no way to add additional info later

P.S it doesn't have to look like a tree Cheesy

print/emboss/engrave the names of wood/plastic/metal 'tags' and wire them together to form a 'mobile'... although this'd get rather unwieldy in just a few generations (as would pretty much any physical representation).
