I think the first guy we had come in thought i was he wanted 1600 to put in a new box  that's what it cost in this state with permits to up the service and put in a new box . i knew what hes was up to, so i played along till he left and went looking . were the type people if you come in our hosue and it's time for a meal, you have join us etc we won't take no for a answer. so what if we are paying you to have work done .

but in this state the going rate for a new box is 700 to 1k, i could have got it done for 700 or less if I put in for bids at one of the sites but i hate doing that but  to up the service in this state, it starts around 1300 and can go up to 2500 tops with permits, depending what you need how bad off you are etc .

Yeah...me I gave up after 4 bids and all came back within 200 bucks of 2500 bucks ..2500 was the low bid like 2541 or some such......it is the town/state rules etc..imho and 1928 old house...residential neighborhood etc...The thing that really pissed me off was the install was a snap. In the previous year I had the Xcel folk out to move the electrical line to the house because I took down a deck and re-sided. They did so for free without issue (I was surprised). I asked the guy doing such if the line to the house could handle 200 amp he said no problem with Xcel on that. So the install was (2) standard length's of 2" conduit (vs 1 1/2" now) ...1 elbow joint...and that's it ...I have a new 32 slot panel...no outside cut off box needed on outside either because would go directly in the panel because directly underneath the line/conduit etc..man there is paying thru the nose then there is feeling you are ripped off!

Well anyway the new panel was enough (had put it in previous to btc mining) and got by on 2 titans 24/7 w/o house wide a/c and gas heat without issue...So best I did not do that anyway now that home mining is dead...so whew!

The other train of thought is if you 'ask' for 200 amp on your house and have 100 amp they probably figure you 'have to' upgrade to 200 amp ...cause your are blowing breakers and need the extra juice for you nice 'family' dwelling...so they can make this 2500 usd the premier price (ie you are stuck needing/wanting a newer 200amp service..gotcha!)

To be honest if they see any of the miners or power usage I think some raise the price of bid's.  I know one that gave be a horrible bid on a 240 line after seeing my mining hardware.

And honestly he did not really want the job which was odd, it's a long story for full version.

er forgot to mention it probably was (inspector on hand etc) a 'city' ordinance ...univ town..thus landlords probably electrocuting self....but that was the rate ..(or I looked like a soft touch)

but yeah if i'd know what you did (duh) i prob would have done the same...as it was i squeaked by.....so its prob for the best

for those of you just needing a 32 port panel ..the charge for that complete was 500 bucks..guess that is more common ..thought they'd screw me on that but probably the 2500 bucks is the electrican's are taking in to account ..if we have to stand around all AM talking to the xcel guys till the electrical inspector shows up or not....this is wtf we are gonna charge for service install in this town

but if i do decide to do it someday I'll try your method ..but doubt it now so ..hell at least saved 1300 bucks compared to you (dumb and lucky always my 'idiot' back up plan) Smiley

I also got lucky as far as ordinances.  With the land being used for farmers around me, they really don't have many at all.  They leave it pretty open with not being in city, if you lived in city there are quite a bit more.

It's almost funny to be honest only big ordinance I can think of is you can no longer open a porn shop.   One of these opened and the town went into a serious battle over it.  What happened is that one got grandfathered in and you can no longer open a "adult" business like that with current ordinances.  Other then that your  pretty much open to do what you want.

The Electrician just finished up and left after he installed a 30 slot box with 5 slots  still open, finally got my 220 30 amp line hocked up to the PDU with monitoring , it's awesome .
I had a 220 30 amp put in a while back but didn't feel safe with it, so it never got used, i was using a few 120 20 amp lines, because of the mess the main box was in, now I feel a lot safer .Smiley, will use it.

yeah i love my 200 amp box as well, cost me around $1500 though Sad

You got a 'deal' where I'm at Xcel (power company) reps and the Electrican and the State Inspector ...ALL have to be present PHYSICALLY at the same time after completion ...for the Power to be turned back on

Base price 200 amp service is 2500 bucks and it goes higher if it is more then 1 stick of conduit and elbow and panel ...goes up also by 'how complex' it is

Fun times. So I slip buy with my 100 amp 32 slot panel. (2 titans 2500w) I have no central AIR and use GAS for heat..so it has worked....although I've never been brave enough to turn the Elec Dryer and Stove on at the same time with the Miners on 24/7.

(squeaked by)

I have Execl too , but being the home owner i claimed i was doing all the work myself found an electrican on craigslist to do all the work for 1k with my supervision of course.  Paid $500 for parts and $300 for the inspection permit.

so yeah with the permit it was actually $1800 .  And i don't know why they told you that , on the pre-inspection the inspector was fine with us doing all the work over the weekend then coming to inspect it later during the week.

Guess I'm lucky I have 200 amps on main for house.  And 100 amps just for my mining area extra to that.

Luckily I'm on a real life crop farm so they installed big power when building house which is nice at this point.  As the 300 amp was there long before mining.  So stupid luck.  I did not realize how expensive it's worth dang I'm happy to have it.

Evil beware: We have waffles!
Being Australian we have native 240v 20a power wherever i have lived...

Now not being an electrician & understanding the whole 120v vs 240v thing can someone explain a few things??

I have always wondered why we use 240v vs 120v as it seems we draw double the power why do we have to pay extra when anything would quite easily run on 120v??

We pay about 0.13kw which to me is expensive compared to some of u out there

What is the major benefit of 240v over 120v??

Cause the only difference i see is u guys built ur power grid before us so u would have used an older style system..

I spose this is one of those things like tv systems (Pal vs Ntsc & whatever the other one is)

You don't draw double the power but could if you plug a 110v device into a 220v socket. Power is just a measure of work being done, and formula is Watts= E*I.

Motor windings, heaters, etc, are setup to work with a given voltage and for the same function (amount of work) will pull the same amount of power. Current draw will be different but total power drawn is the same. Watts is Watts.

As for why North America uses 110V, all I have been able to come up with is that when using 220v distribution it takes smaller gauge wires to support a given load and so it was cheaper. That or wire insulation methods had improved by the time the rest of the world started electrifying. Either way, 220v is far better.

power gets lost on the lines it runs on.

every foot of wire from the meter to a plug in your home causes voltage drop.

Lets say I have a s-7 the meter reads and charges me at 240 volts x 5 amps = 1200 watt.
The run from the meter to the main box to the plug for the s-7 is 20 feet.  That 20 feet will cause voltage drop say to 239 volts  so 239 x 5 =  1195 watts are reaching the psu and I get charge for 1200.

if 120 volts    it is 119  volts x 10 amps  = 1190 watts  and I get charged for 1200 watts at the meter.  So 240 is more efficient.
That extra 5 watts is 3 or 4 kwatts a month which is 40 to 50 kwatts a year.  I think it is worse then this example.

IT also allows for more watts on the same gauge of wire.

I think a 12 gauge wire can do 20 amps at 120 volts  so this circuit is 2400 watts
I think a 12 gauge wire can do 20 amps at 240 volts  so this circuit is 4800 watts

it cost me 800 buck to put in a new box and rerun the old 240 line to a better place, in my state you don't need to call the power company , or get a permit as long as nothing is done to the existing service if I went to a 400 amp service then i would have needed a permit had to let the Power company know etc right now I don't see me needing anymore then 200 amp were it's at now , the way it looks i can run a lot of miner like maybe 12 on this line then another 12 on another line then i would need to up the service . I think with my service i can get a way with using that much on two lines before i would need a 400 amp service.Smiley .

We've got 200A three-phase here at the shop so everything's been running 208 pretty nice. Looking to expand to 400A service soon. When I was running any kind of serious miners still at the house I pulled some temporary 240V circuits just for them. It is quite handy.

I think you are about to fall in love.  220/240 is so nice on the amount of power it has.  Having a PDU and some devices on it really is great.

I don't see myself installing any more 120.    If I need any more I will do 240 again.  but hopefully my mining area does not need any more wires ran for a bit.
