If the user allows it, the total amount tipped to him could be displayed publicly as a sort of "rep."

The tip is supposed to be minimal, instant, from a specific forum user and for a specific forum post - only then it acts like the right incentive to improve quality of the content.
And it's supposed to be one-click only.

Couldn't agree more.

Should bitcoin get massive traction during CES there will be an influx of newbies here.
Very few will have enough netiquette and courage to actually delve through the countless posts in order to get up to speed. Most of them will require immediate support.
An easy-to-use link might just be the way for us to get compensated for the effort.

Why not just put tip addresses in signatures?  There is one below.  Feel free to try it out!
I already explained why - same reason as with the URI method.
The tip is supposed to be minimal, instant, from a specific forum user and for a specific forum post - only then it acts like the right incentive to improve quality of the content.
And it's supposed to be one-click only. Well, maybe two clicks - from any web browser, anywhere you are.

The problem is then that the forum must serve as a bank, a responsibility I am sure they do not want.

I like the idea, but implementation is unrealistic.
Bank - that's a big word.
It's not about big amounts. If you deposit i.e. 0.2 BTC it can last for weeks, even if you don't get back any tips yourself.

And the forum can outsource handling of the wallet/deposits to some other, trusted person or company - like instawallet, blockchain.info, mtgox, or whatever - satoshi's personal wallet Tongue
Everyone willing to deposit (or to not yet withdraw) would know where is his money and who is responsible for his tiny balance - the forum would have no liability here, only providing the user interface.
I don't think the total amount would be that huge to have a trust issue here - rather technical issues.
But if any forum in the world should be able to deal with the technical issues of implementing bitcoin micro-transfers, I would say bitcointalk.org is a good place to start. Smiley

assuming that you run a bitcoin client on the pc that you're using at the moment and you want to unlock it to send a tip.
i dont think you can assume it for most of the cases.
and someone may not want to wait 6 confirmations to get his tip from an unknown sender.
it should be integrated into the forum - this would improve quality of the content.
its much easier and efficient to just click a button, rather than do a bitcoin transaction.

or, just support uri scheme so no "wallet" is necessary: http://www.thebitcointrader.com/2012/01/multibit-implements-browser-protocol.html

There is this idea.
Not mine, I just saw it somewhere else.
But great.

Every user of the forum has a BTC balance, which is like an online ewallet where he can store his bitcoins (by sending them to the forum's wallet up front, or to some payment processor, whatever)
So you can deposit bitcoins from your account or withdraw them - might be automatic, depends on the scale.

And additionally, next to each post, there is a button - when you click it you send 0.01BTC from your wallet to the author of this post.
This is great idea - yous should make it. I can help you with coding if you want Smiley
