Theymos please introduce the feature to follow people. There are some people I want to follow and get notified whenever they make a new thread.

Of course, you are one of them. You will be the first one I'll follow.
minerjones, Mitchell, LoyceV will be on my list as well.
I got you this: LoyceV's: Follow users on Bitcointalk.org (posts and/or topics).

Would love this feature personally.  Examples how I’d use it-
*Favorite members who rarely post (Casascius , Smoothie & Kialara) if they release a coin by some miracle, I NEED to know!  Cheesy
* If Nullius comes back, I’d want to know. I’ve got a bit of a man crush on true Mr Robots and from everything I’ve read from others, this dude is like Elliot himself. That’s someone I want to keep up with.
*Scammers/ghosters -Normally scammers take off and are never to be seen again, but not all. If they do come back online, not that it can do much for a victim, but I’d absolutely want to know.
Feel free to test my latest feature with all those users Smiley

So, poll results out. Not many people voted but it clearly shows where the majority goes.
I forget to bump it every morning. You can still vote if you want, I won't lock the poll till eternity.

I guess that's more of a Facebook feature that if you have followed that user and click the option of "See first" on every post, and if you open your Facebook app you'll eventually see that user's posts. Since this is a forum and every time you open the site you'll get eventually on the main index and not on the post/s of the user/s you've followed, so to say the least, this should be on one of the headers on the index just like what we used on our Watchlist and be sorted out base on your preference may it by date, alphabetical, etc. maybe a link saying "Show unread topics of the users you've followed".

Yeah, why not but if this is going to be implemented better it will be on epochtalk forum.
I have quoted something like that in OP. I also think it will be a better approach but why not both.
You can select mail for some specific users while just follow the others to get an update when you login into your account.

That’s more or less how I was picturing it: a non-intrusive feature (i.e. no emails), on a configurable personal list in a tab, where a numeric symbol next to the profiles you follow would indicate new threads (or posts, whatever the configuration) from those profiles. A simple luminescent number on the toolbar could indicate new entries, and one could go into a tab to access those entries of the followed profiles.

Not something I would thrive for personally, but I’m not really personally too keen the on the social following thingy per se. Many are though, and it would probably be attractive for them.

I voted Maybe. The idea is not bad and I have nothing against it I just don't want to login to Bitcointalk tomorrow and see 30 new PMs, mostly notifications of posts of the users I decide to follow.
If this can be made in a way that it doesn't spam our PM box I am up for it. A dedicated page just for the posts of users you follow like someone already suggested seems like the best idea so far.

i voted no because i am more interested in boards and the subject that is being created not all the things a user creates. for example if you follow theymos (as you said in OP) you will be constantly notified about his auction topics for ad space which may not interest you if you don't have a business you wanted to advertise on the forum. then there are his Meta topics which you would see if you are interested in Meta-related topics and visit the board already.
the only thing you might have missed is his interesting topics he sometimes starts in other boards like: [Guide] Decent mixing methods or Idea for uncensorable DNS

but those you can easily find by opening this link: https://bitcointalk.org/gettopics.php?user=35

I think if I read the OP correctly it's going to be an optional feature, you can decide to follow many users, few users or no user at all, it's not like you'll get notifications for users you are not following, that's when it's going to be annoying.

Yeah, it would be optional thing. But my point that I doubt that this feature would be very useful. Let's say that you start following LoyceV, suchmoon and The Pharmacist for example - no doubt thag they are great posters. Let's say that they make 7-10 posts/day, it means that you would get almost 30 notifications just in one day - it's a lot. And most likely that not all of their posts will be interesting for you.

The feature would be a good one, may not be so great on the aspect it would look more like a social media feature, but it would keep users up to date with posts made by their favorite uses, which of course they will follow voluntarily.

It's a good feature. But the problem is that list of the users that their posts are shown in this page is controlled only by you and I cannot have my own list.
I could create it for custom lists too, but it's kinda resource intensive to create for a lot of different custom lists, that's why I want to offer it as a service to signature campaigns.

I picked third option, because I'm not sure that such option would be really needed. It's not a social network where you can follow someone. And probably there is very few people whose rvery post of them is must read. Even theymos - would you really like to get notification when theymos posts new ad auction? There are lot of people here who post great content, but I'm not sure that I would really like to be notified every time when someone posts something, it would be just too annoying.

I voted, but I don't see results of voting so far, and I am wondering why?

A user who posts a poll can make the results hidden until the poll is expired.

There are three options.
1. Show the poll's results to anyone.
2. Only show the results after someone has voted.
3. Only show the results after the poll has expired.

but I would not like to receive emails about that.

It was suggested long ago and I did support the idea back then, I'll do it again but I don't think we'll see that implemented in the near future. Sure it's worth trying Smiley

I meant recent posts which shows posts made by certain users. For this purpose, there should be a list which we can mark any user we want.
It's there, check the link, click the navigation for Posts.

I don't agree with getting notified. Because that would be annoying. If I want to follow some users, I think there will be more than 100 notifications per day.

Yeb thats what i am thinking too , and if you have a few Users in the List you get spammed with notifications like it is on Facebook or any social media !
Guess nobody wants that like this way , you also can add some posts from Users you want to follow on your watchlist and you can look there also and get on there post history.

It's better to have a page which shows recent posts made by some specific users of the forum.
For example, I choose 10 users. When I visit recent posts page, only posts made by these 10 users are shown.
You mean, like this:
I might have something: can you have a look at http://loyce.club/sigcamp/chipmixer/ ?
I was thinking of offering this as a service to signature campaigns (either companies or managers). As a demonstration, it currently uses data from just over a week on all ChipMixer signature participants (it doesn't get automated updates yet). A real version would get automated updates (depening on the page it will vary from several times per hour to several times per day).

All I'd need is a list of userIDs in a campaign (and regular updates), and I scrape (almost) all posts within seconds of being posted (I don't check the posts for being edited after that).
This can give a quick overview of the currently active users and topics, and it instantly highlights the most active users.
If desired, I could also exclude certain boards or topics that are excluded from a campaign.
I wasn't planning on using this just to follow certain users, but it wouldn't be too difficult to do.

This can be useful, but it is needed to visit the profiles to read the posts.

LoyceV will be on my list as well.
Thanks, I guess Tongue But my topic are really not all that interesting. Out of the last 20, I think only 5 are really worth keeping track of. That would give you 75% disappointing announcements.

I doubt the forum will get a feature which you can get from an external site: several sites offer to monitor a certain webpage, and send you an email if it changes. If you use that on the link I posted above, you should get notified when I open a new topic.

Yes why not. I'd like to follow some users as well and them doing an activity here in the forum will allow me to check what they are up to.

Also means of stalking  Embarrassed  If you follow someone you suspect to be a scammer, you can then see what sort of threads he had been actively responding. The feature will be helpful in ways to track anyone that you are closely watching by means of a notice system.
You can go and check his last posts from his profile unless you want to spam your mailbox with his posts. Cheesy
I'm not talking about the posts, the focus is on threads.

I voted for yes, why not.  There are only a handful of members I'd follow, but I think it would be a good feature to add.  In particular, I'd like to follow Theymos's posts, since they're usually important and I often miss them.  Yes, I could check his post history but it would be so much easier if I got notified when he made a new thread or new post.

Maybe this is a possibility with the new forum software?  I wouldn't expect Theymos to implement a feature like this while he's still using SMF software.  The way I see it is that if it's not too much of a pain in the ass, it would be really good if he could add some of these suggested features to the new forum.  Some of them are pretty good.

Edit: People are getting confused between the posts and thread.
Post: Anything you are writing on the forum is a post including a new thread. Everything here is a post https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=USERID;sa=showPosts

Thread: A new topic.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;threads;u=USERID;sa=showPosts
