You can use coinpayments to accept multiple altcoins along with bitcoin but if you want to accept bitcoin and quickly convert them to fiat than I recommend you to use bitpay. 
If you asking for payment gateway api there is some you will get bitpay,gocoin or you can also contact exchange services in your country they will provide Api. One more trick is that you can keep QR code in your place for accepting bitcoin.
Yes bitpay is very big service for merchants and the fees are also very low as compared to others. I have seen and used bitpay on many sites as buyer of course and it seems to be nice mode of payment. So you can try that one. Indeed, contactless technology is always great but they have higher fees and user have to invest into hardwallets before anyone can use it. So you may wanna go for bitpay and processor alike.
Aren't the rates too high for most services? I mean BTC isn't really for daily transactions
