The owner (a former miner) doesn't even need these coins. He splitted a large account (147PsLmcSFhEUEjAerYY6VEH6Z6kCrDwyK) and transferred back in 2017 to three addresses 500 BTC each. Two of them he has access to:

But for the address 1PfNh5fRcE9JKDmicD2Rh3pexGwce1LqyU he lost a part of the private key as you can see on the diary photo. And he agreed to make a challenge, where people can participate to find the WIF.

Interesting remark. It is possible to launch search without given target address, then program will output every WIF which fulfills criteria (produces the correct WIF having initial parameters). I think they do not use that approach. It would give many results, but as usually when we are in crypto world, chances it produces address with balance are almost 0.

The program is looking for exactly 1 address (in this challenge case for 1PfNh5fRcE9JKDmicD2Rh3pexGwce1LqyU) and if the calculated WIF leads to this BTC address then it stops and shows the WIF. And this BTC address balance is > 0 (https://blockchair.com/bitcoin/address/1PfNh5fRcE9JKDmicD2Rh3pexGwce1LqyU).

I may ensure you there are thousands of valid WIFs with a given checksum. That's the way how my program WifSolverCuda works, it calculates checksum for private keys and if it covers the expected one (from original WIF), pubkey, address etc are checked. But as application verifies millions of keys every second, there are many, many hits of potential keys.

Soon we will know. The diagram https://github.com/phrutis/wif500 shows that they have completed 90% of the challenge.

1 out of 70 is really weak proof though. Even Electrum 4.3.0 Windows installer has 1/65 flag[1]. The actual concern of this project are,
1. Whether the author will give the reward if someone beat the challenge.
2. Whether valid WIF (leads to non-empty Bitcoin address) actually exist.
3. It's closed source.

It all comes down to whether you trust them or not. But personally i would use my money/resource for something else even if i own or rent high end GPU.

The organizer of the challenge is showing a picture of the damaged paper https://github.com/phrutis/wif500. How is it possible that they have a picture, if soferox is the owner and didn't ask the organizer to create a challenge?

Can you give us an answer?

Users should never even download a .exe file from a source they don't know or fully trust. Verifying is not going to give you the required information specially using unreliable tools like VirusTotal with false positives and false negatives.
Specially if the project itself is closed source.

Well for starters, he wrote that his notebook with Bitcoin private key was damaged by a flood, and since I never saw him talk about any challenge like this, I'd say it's not likely for him to be the challenge organizer (unless he explicitly mentioned that in some post that has eluded my attention).

Maybe VirusTotal isn't able to analize files good enough?

And i would recommend to all users to verify each .exe before installing it, it's a good security practice that we all should follow.

Someone who got the "diary picture" from the owner of the picture ( = owner of the coins, who also made the picture says the FAQ) and asked the organizer of the challenge to get the WIF as they have not the knowledge to compute the remaining part.
