Yes you are correct... but it is safer than things like carding as the owner does not get hurt by it. The customer doesn't have to worry about anything when SE'ed compared to things like chargebacking or carding as you mentioned... where those can get one's account banned or investigated. The only downside to this is that I cannot get the Fitbit pebble for the same address more than once ... but there are many solutions/alternatives to that.
Disclaimer: social engineering 'free' things involves black hat methods, which involves cracked Fitbit accounts stolen from original owners and lying to Fitbit about their identity to receive a replacement Fitbit. It's hard to catch SE'd accounts and replacements which means that you may not be caught, but you also might end up on the wrong end of the stick.
