CONSIDERING BITCOIN AS A SOCIAL MOVEMENT: INVOLVEMENT, KNOWLEDGE, AND INVESTMENT AS MOTIVATIONS

Sorry it took so long everybody, a few bumps in the road with any major academic assignment I guess… So I conducted a survey coming up on a year ago with several online message boards that seem like prominent places for the Bitcoin community to meet and discuss. The main purpose of my research is to tease out a way that could reveal the social movement aspects of the Bitcoin community. Some of my findings turned out pretty positive I would say, revealing that especially those who have more knowledge about Bitcoin and those who have been involved longer seem to see Bitcoin for its more revolutionary aspects. I’m posting a link to it in a Dropbox account below. Enjoy!

“Bitcoin is a tool for freeing humanity from oligarchs and tyrants, dressed up as a get-rich-quick scheme” - @Naval

I love how you ended up with that one beautiful line aptly summarizing what Bitcoin truly is and what it is right now in the eyes of many.

Bitcoin has somehow evolved through the years. It has somehow developed different faces. It used to be more of a currency only known and used by a very small number of people online, often only exploiting the anonymity it gives. There seemed to be a very strict and exclusive niche of Bitcoin users before. Right now, it has already changed into an exploding global community. Bitcoin has turned into a trend, revolutionary still but the get-rich-quick scheme factor has somehow made it more into an asset, or a digital gold as others would consider, rather than a tool to counter the status quo through which they could emancipate themselves from the chains of the current system.

It's true that we're free from those oligarchs that can control the financial economy base on what they want. And the last description of Naval for bitcoin as "dressed" like that, it's also the reality that people who are new to bitcoin will think like that. But there should be a better description than that because it can mislead again people that don't understand what bitcoin is. They are likely to think of it as literally described as that without doing research.

Already there of you social documentaries relevant to Bitcoin has been published on YouTube at the same time there are many people telling that Bitcoin is a scam anda scammers only using that.
We need to change those things under educate the investors and the normal people who doesn't know much about cryptocurrencies.

Not your Keys, Not your Bitcoins
Congrats on getting done such an interesting survey. Definitely Bitcoin can be considered the catalyst for a major turnover regarding the control of wealth in the world and especially the independency from government control that it can confer.

Thanks for sharing the results!  People ask others to go through academic surveys quite frequently, but this is the first time I see the result of it being available. I did not read the whole thing (sorry), but I read the conclusions. I guess you're right that even when people stay long with Bitcoin they still care about the profit. In fact, I suppose that in the earliest times people did not care about it (it was more of a revolutionary experiment than a way to get rich), so the profit-oriented approach increased with time as the price of Bitcoin grew significantly. In my first year with Bitcoin, I did not care about the price at all and just sold everything I earned, but then I started to care when the price skyrocketed to $20k and I could not let go of the holding habit since then.
