I don't see any mention of you not having your SEED.  If you do have the seed just create a new wallet and it will automatically be unencrypted.  Had to throw this out there since I saw no mention of the seed.

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I do not have a SEED, just used a passphrase to encrypt my wallet.

Cheers!

If you are using a desktop wallet, it's fine if you forgot your password as SEED is the only need to access your wallet but in here you don't have any backup of your SEED. What wallet are you using? It's a basic thing to do backup of the seeds Huh

I once encountered a thread here that he lost his passphrase, in this case, Electrum. One person do bruteforce to his wallet.dat and able to crack it adn recover the funds. Although in this case, the password was tagged as an easy one. Just don't have an idea how to do bruteforce on your wallet or is it still effective.

Yeah, a desktop wallet. It's a Bata (BTA) wallet. Literally all i did was encrypt my wallet with a passphrase and then backup it after I moved my funds there. Could you clarify what are you meaning by "SEED" I just want to be sure we're on the same track.

What I've been trying to do is that i get the "hash" from my wallet.dat and then use John The Ripper on it.

It's a brand new one, not an old favourite. But who knows I might've typed in something I use without me even knowing.

But i've got a good guess on what it should be.

If nothing helps then gotta wait for quantum computers lol...

Cheers!

a good guess might well be enough then. maybe try something like this - https://hashcat.net/hashcat/

or mr wallet recovery services if that's not your thing.

it kind of depends on whether this was a brand new password, or one of your old favourites that you might have forgotten or written down wrong.

if it's the latter then i'm sure someone's gonna be along with a little program that can help. if not there's these guys - https://walletrecoveryservices.com/ but they need some half remembered ideas to work off.

if it's a brand new password then that's gonna be tougher.

So, my problem stands in the title.
I know - you may think, how did he forget his passphrase?? Believe me or not, I wrote it down the minute I set the passphrase, but it just isn't working.

Right now I've tried the following:

http://www.gobitgo.com/articles/1005/How-To-Recover-Your-Bitcoin-Wallet-Password/

On this guide I'm stuck on the step 5.7

The second thing I've tried is this:

https://github.com/jackjack-jj/pywallet

And on that guide I'm stuck on the step 3/4.

I then noticed that both of these are a little bit outdated, was wondering if anyone here has experience in recovering a wallets passphrase and would like to help (for a little bounty of course)

Regards
