I think everyone would prefer single topics rather than a million different topics about the same thing popping up every day with different qualities of grammar and punctuations. So my opinion would be to keep an infinite amount of posts in a single topic.

Is there a limit to the number of posts that can be placed in a given subject?

There isn't but theymos could easily implement it, but a maximum number of posts wouldn't do much because people would just open up another thread right after. People already create the same topics just reworded in a different order time after time:

what is the bitcoin for you? and how did he change your life?
how do bitcoin change your life?
Can bitcoin change your life better than before?
How does bitcoin affect your life?

Those are actual threads. I've probably locked or trashed dozens of those type of threads along with bitcoin vs gold, Is bitcoin better than gold, Gold or bitcoin, which do you prefer? Is bitcoin a better currency than gold? etc etc but they're never ending. The problem is shitposters and crapcpin campaigns. Hopefully they'll die down once people realise posting in them will get them next to zero merits but they're still valuable fort shitposters to shitpost in.

Its a promising proposal you got there.

On other forums there are certain limits so to speak. In the sections like Bitcoin and Altcoin discussions even in the Economics, somehow they are full of threads that have so many pages. So if we apply the same rules as for those other forums like this, maybe we can reduce spam messages. But if the topic is relevant, maybe they should just add another thread that is related to the first thread. Or they could just delete that topic. Something like this:

In other forums, a certain limit is hit and people are forced to create a "part 2" of the thread and they continue there.

Most of the topics like those are not being read by the OP anymore, so there's a high probably that some replies are repetitive.
Although, there's the opposite end of the spectrum. many users will complain that their threads aren't all in the same place, for example in the past we've had users requesting for threads to be merged and AFAIK some have been merged. Sometimes a new thread needs to be made, but if it's one of these generic questions then they should be locked and any other thread that is opened after should probably be trashed and referred back to the locked topic especially if there's no recent developments and all replies have been exhausted.

I don't think there's a limit of pages in this forum. In other forums, a certain limit is hit and people are forced to create a "part 2" of the thread and they continue there.

In here there are many of these multi-page threads, many are filled with people posting nonsense to get some satoshis on signature campaigns. BUT it would be unfair to call all multi-page threads a spamfest. For instance, the Martin Armstrong discussion thread has 200+ pages and there are pretty high quality stuff to read in there:

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/martin-armstrong-discussion-1082909

Just ignore low quality threads and you should be ok.
If I understand the question correctly he's not asking whether there's a limit to how many pages the forum can have, but when its justified to create a new topic of an existing discussion.

I don't think there's any set rules on this, but as a general rule of thumb you should only create a new topic of an existing discussion if one of these are true:

- The discussion is off topic
- The thread is self moderated, and you would like to participate in a discussion without moderation from the OP
- The discussion isn't up to date
- You've tried to participate in the discussion by adding new quality discussion but, have received no replies. You may open a topic about this recent development, rather than trying to replace the existing thread.

If it's a question like "Why is Bitcoin better than gold" then this is likely to be always relevant and I don't think it's beneficial to open another topic about it just because there's a lot of pages in the existing one.

This is actually due to members in the forum are too much. If a single person will give one reply in ten posts, there will be more than 100 posts pages for different 100 topic in the day.
Thanks to merit system I saw that some of the members turns off due to regulation of achieving merit points.
I must say it is very hard but interesting because due to merit system makes me think. I keep learning and learning and try to help others as much I can.

Is there a limit to the number of posts that can be placed in a given subject?

Sometimes you look at the number of pages within a given subject and you wonder if the subject should really be that lengthy from a practical point of view as well as from a quality perspective.

For example, on the Bitcoin Discussion section there are multiple subjects that are extremely lengthy. Amongst current live subject we can find the following examples.

- Do you like bitcoin, what is your reason -> 37 pages of posts
- Why people say gold is better ? -> 84 pages of posts
- Is bitcoin really secure ? -> 97 pages of posts
- Do you think bitcoin will survive after 100 years? -> 152 pages of posts
- will bitcoin end? -> 146

I deliberately skipped some subjects from the above list since the subject seamed lengthly in posts but justified due to subject importance for general knowledge. Regardless, time factor also comes into the equation since older posts within a live topic may not be represent the current situation properly, only the newer ones (for example, those related to bitcoin price).

Perhaps there should be a default maximum number of posts per subject, but admins would be able to extend this limit if subject is worth it.
