When the difficulty reaches high enough and electricity costs make it a complete loss to mine on video cards (operating cost), FPGA/ASICs will come into the picture.

It's going to be all about Mh/J by 2013.

Of course, we've yet to see what happens to Mh/J with 28nm (and lower, as they come out) GPUs.

Why is a FPGA better for mining than a GPU?

Primary reason, it's more geeky and hence more fun and nutritious for the mind and soul.

Long story short, FPGA's aint cost effective compared to GPUs for the average punter.
