Oh strange to see this thread. I was thinking that online shopping fraud is just happening in our country Pakistan. Russia is well devolped country and the best technology system then how it can be happened so easily.

Our local online shopping platform Daraz has so many such cases where buyer received an empty box with full of shoppers instead of real item and this platform has no return system after opening box. Seller generally buying fake review to attract buyers.

We use now Ali express for safe deal have a return sytem if the item doesn't meet the criteria states in ads.

Why not use a platform where some of his friends or family already ordered for buying expensive items?

Most miners wrote that the buyer is a fool, because for this price he could buy this video card in a trusted store.

Any sane miner would first question why a 4090 in the first place.
Not even considering that GPU mining is a lottery on shitcoins right now, even buying that 4090 for 1000$ with $50 a month over zero electricity cost is a stupid move.

Due to the complex logistics system, now the buyer cannot return the goods.

By complex logistic system you mean the seller not giving a f*, the market place not caring as they've got heir commission and the law, well, what law!

Russia has its own peculiarities, and expensive goods can be stolen or replaced at the post office. There are many cases when, instead of long iPhones, clients receive soap or rubbish that is the same in weight. Good stores have their own delivery points in large cities; when I order goods there, I first check them and then pay. When ordering, you don't even need an advance payment.

This is the most reliable method. If you are dealing with unknown stores, how can a buyer who pays $2850 for an acceptor to see the goods? This is really strange.

The buyer must have fallen victim to greed in the first place because he thought he would get the graphics card at a discount of $1000, but in reality he got a piece of garbage. He should have known from the beginning that the presence of this huge discount meant fraud or that the goods would be bad.

There are many marketplaces that are likely to scam victims. If with important equipment like this, I wouldn't just buy there and will do the payment first. If cash on delivery (COD) is allowed, I'll choose that option if it's going to cost me money. It's possible that there are two suspects there, the store/seller or the courier that possibly replaced the goods upon knowing that it's a video card. Whether it is a Russian marketplace or not, it will serve as a lesson to everyone that just go to physical store if it's possible when you're buying something valuable as a 4090.

Payment Gateway Allows Recurring Payments

There is enough such scam in Russia, and large marketplaces like megamarket do not bear responsibility after receiving the goods, because they are couriers and not sellers. Most miners wrote that the buyer is a fool, because for this price he could buy this video card in a trusted store.

But this marketplace sells 4090 rtx with a good discount starting from $1000, and the miners know that this is a scam.

This is the danger of purchasing online that’s why COD(cash on delivery) is a very popular payment method in my country for item like this because you can’t guarantee that you will receive the right item especially expensive one upon delivery. Sometimes even the courier is the one stealing the items and change it to the cheap one since most of them is just  3rd party delivery service.

I hope the victim have a video record when he open the package or else it’s very hard to win this case since there’s a chance that the buyer itself change the item and want a refund while he still get the right item.

These things only demotivate me to buy things online. I have never been scammed online yet. But, I have heard from many friends that they were scammed online. I would never suggest anyone buy expensive things online unless they are tooooo trusted. There was a time when I was thinking of buying a miner online but I wasn't familiar with the market and I didn't know if I should trust them or not. But then I changed my mind and didn't order it online. There is a very reputable shopping website here and its name is Daraz! Most of the time I can order products with Cash on the delivery system. But, it has some limitations. I am glad I wasn't the victim.

I hope that the buyer will somehow be able to solve this problem, although if he did not issue a refusal upon receipt now it will be a big quest.
I also took my 4090 last year on the Ozone marketplace with delivery from Kazakhstan, and now reading such stories you start to look more towards retail

Was there also no buyer protection or anything? e.g. middle man/escrow.
Based on the review site that OP posted, it refers to this marketplace, megamarket.ru, it is certain that this exchange is also an escrow. It seems like the marketplace is pretty good, it should be easy for them to pressure sellers or logistics partners to resolve disputes within tolerance times.

In many such cases, the problem is solved by returning the product, but since you mentioned that there are logistical problems in returning the product, and then re-shipping the original product takes time, the seller must return the money directly without waiting for the dispute request to be completed, which requires closing the money for a month.
In any case, we cannot say that this is fraud, as both the buyer and the seller did not benefit from this method unless it was not possible for the buyer to obtain a refund or the seller was deliberately selling the wrong products.

Could you also elaborate this? does this mean if it weren't for the logistics problem, the alleged victim would've been refunded? was crypto used?

Was there also no buyer protection or anything? e.g. middle man/escrow. There are tons of scammers out there hence a buyer protection is a must for these kind of transaction to minimize the risk.

The links posted are all in russian (and can be a long read) so it would be nice if op could summarize the whole alleged scam scheme.

Yes, I'm an asshole
That does not happen from this marketplace? The transaction happened in other forum? And both the scammer and the victim doesn't have an account here?

This is a story about a buyer in Russia who ordered a GeForce RTX 4090 video card for 2850 dollars, and the store sent him a lamp worth 23 dollars. Due to the complex logistics system, now the buyer cannot return the goods. The client has not been able to receive a refund for a month now.
