Really good question.  Also a mobile app would be great too.

A mobile app does exist, but it hasn't been updated in years and kinda sucks. I am actually trying to write my own Android app but first I am asking the writer of the other app for his source code so I can update, fix, and maintain it.

Has there been published a release date of the new software yet? I followed the discussion 1-2 years ago, but could not find any date.

there's no fixed date on that. in a way I think this is better because people won't expect it to be released on xx date only to be delayed because some bugs.

I use Bitcointalk almost daily. I am wondering if there are free tools or (browser) apps which could be used to keep track of my activities on the board (like answers on threads etc)?

Nothing interesting really , the only thing is what the above user pointed at as far as I know .
Developers  can't do much advanced things without an API honestly , otherwise they would make a lot of nice stuff . Hopefully an API will be available on the new forum software .

While not directly answering your question, there is an extension for Chrome and another browser.  But I have not reviewed the source code so use at your own risk:  https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/free-bitcointalk-notification-extension-for-chrome-opera-1188361
