I'll add that Detroit is a bit of a special case. There are not many cities with several huge factories that all closed down in only a few years. Many inhabitants were left in despair, so they might be more willing to act to make things better than in other cities.

Interesting to read, but would be better with more facts than stories. Perhaps crime statistics in the past decade?
Also I am sure this doesn't always work. Cities like New York have been able to reduce crime significantly by the involvement of the government
exactly. Nothing backs it up or why it is actually better (or worse).   Detroit has very high crime, so I can imagine there is low hanging fruit for crime reduction.   The article lacks real information.

Leaving aside the details on whether the U.S. budget is actually shrinking, one needs to look no further than the city of Detroit to find the spontaneous order, civic cooperation, and peaceful market forces that take over when government simply isn't around.
