According to my experience, cyber etiquette collapsed with the arrival of the Kevins from WoW... From there it only went down hill (Facebook crowd, and now the illiterates from Twitter and YouTube).
Like any other thing, it's first used by enthousiasts and passionate people, but when it becomes mainstream the mass dumbs it down to the least common denominator. The same thing happened with video games and internet in general.
A good example of this is reddit, if you look at stats, in the beginning most posts talked about technology and programming, now most posts are useless memes, dumb arguments about politics and porn. Reddit also suffered a wave of SWJ / PC culture censuring most controversial subs. It's a good example showing the appropriation and censorship from the masses.

Censorship is a global phenomenon, not restricted to only 1 country or continent.

You researchers are not focused on what is really going on! Thanks for all your effort, but that research is just proving what we already have known for years.

Freedom of speech. Three words that get thrown around and written about so often that what the expression means is more about misinformation than truth.

And misinformation can be detrimental to online professionals as they try to separate the wheat from the chaff and understand a right so important to the foundation of the United States that the founding fathers made it the first amendment to the Constitution to better clarify what rights belong to its citizens.

It's so sad to see all those kids raised in America censoring one another... What did they learn in school? In the old days respecting the point of view of others, listening to some else opinions, exposing your arguments and responding to the ones of the others were all common practice. Now it's ban, report button, outright censorship... What is going on?

On QQ, wechat and co it's exclusively the gov who censors... What is going on in the west? Merkel going rogue with Facebook, European Union imposing censorship on every private social media, censuring results from search engine (only in Europe, meaning creating an informational disadvantage for European users).

Possible reason is that technology is advanced but moral or cyber etiquette is not taught on school. Social responsibility should be also integrated on information technology learning to develop well disciplined netizens. Its a matter of advance technology and less civilized people meet in a certain era.

These dictators politicians are doing this because they know that most of the youth not interested in politics.

They are censored or not matters little to many young people.

It is as if they had brainwashed the young.

I don't feel that anyone is brainwashed, but the young know that democracy is bullshit. Their voice won't change anything.
The change is happening gradually because of their lack of interest. If they withdraw from society it will collapse and nothing can be done about it.

What may be the reason to live for someone, is the reason for other's death. We judge what is right and what is wrong on our ideals and thoughts. What may seem reality to us is someone else's dream. Every speech we make can be an inspiration to a forlorn brother and at the same time, it will prove to be a bunches of vile accusations for someone else. Freedom of speech liberates us of these bindings and allows us to show our true nature by speaking up what we see. Politicians are not restricted from this right. Why are we banned then?

Freedom has its limit. There a difference in free speech and hate speech. Your freedom should not have negative impact on others. When people are blinded by propaganda and extremism, their speech is always a bounded one. Religious, Racial, Political likeness and hate affects the free speech. So, it's a really complicated idea. But again the basic human needs and desires are same. Food, Shelter, Clothing, likewise.

Freedom has its limits. But free speech has no limit. Something which you may consider as hate speech may not be so for the others. In such situations, the best thing for you to do is to ignore the speech and move on. Demanding that someone should keep their mouth shut, because his speech irritates you is moronic. Common... we are living in the 21st century... and not in the 16th century when freethinkers were burnt at stake for blasphemy.

Even if it is "hate speech," it should still not be censored. Here's why: Let's say you have a group of people (Group A) who want to murder another group of people (Group B). In today's extreme society, it is considered "hate speech" for people to point out that Group A wants to murder Group B. That is one among many reasons why ANY censorship is evil. My example IS playing out in many different forms today. I'm not talking about prohibiting saying "b*mb" on a plane. That is a situation of immediate and extreme danger. I'm talking about expressing one's opinions and observations. To prohibit that is what the Nazis and Communists did (and still do). It's very Orwellian and wrong. That's why the US founders had the First Amendment, to prevent censorship of any ideas and speech.

It is insanity. Anyone who censors another's speech (or print) -- no matter what the subject is -- is a fascist and is anti-freedom. They will tell you they're not, but look at what they do (censoring and bullying to force their way over others) instead of what they say. They're in the same company as the Nazis. It's coming almost exclusively from one side of the political spectrum.
