open port 8333, on windows you can disable firewall that is probably blocking outbound connection for your client(just disable that)

You shouldn't disable the firewall completely. Just open the 8333 port on the compute and forward port 8333 to your desktop computer's local LAN IP address on your router if you have one. You can also try the easy way: enable uPnP on your router, firewall and in bitcoin core.

I am running the QT bitcoin-core on my home PC for a week...

you need to allow  outbound connections, otherwise it is not a full node....if see the standard 8 connections, you are not contributing

I see the standard 8 connections....
How do I contribute?
How to allow outbound connections?

open port 8333, on windows you can disable firewall that is probably blocking outbound connection for your client(just disable that)

you need to go in advance security under firewall option

I am running the QT bitcoin-core on my home PC for a week...

Sweet!!!

There are so few people doing this world-wide, around 6000. I wonder why?!?

People are silly lol.  I am hoping for over 100k by 2017.

100k based on what?

I just WANT it to be there.  I would bet against it reaching 100k by 2017.

From what I understand there are two types of nodes, one of them for data centers and one for home servers.  I also understand that you will not really make money running a node.

No.

There are different types of wallets, there is no "data centre node" / "home node".

You run the QT on your computer and have the blockchain on your comp.  The BC is like 25 gigs right now.

Wallets like blockchain.info do not store the BC(Blockchain) on your comp thus are not a node just a wallet.

You're right that there aren't different versions of nodes for home and datacenters, but maybe he meant to distinguish between bitcoin-qt and bitcoind / bitcoin-cli.

if full nodes form the backbone of the network - why they are not rewarded as moners do, thus keeping the full nodes updated, for free?

It doesn't take any power to run....

Why in the hell would you put money into Bitcoin and the refuse to help it's security at zero cost to you..............

The reward is Bitcoin is more secure.

Mining takes energy(electricity) thus it costs money thus there is a reward.

If your computer has a 500GB HD or bigger, you're into bitcoin and you're not running the QT wallet all the time... tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk.

There can NEVER be enough nodes.  EVER is there such thing as to many nodes Wink, the more the better.  MOAR NODES MOAR!! RUN THE NODES BITCOINERS!

what's the importance of running a full node on my PC (i.e. bitcoin core wallet)? These days there are about 6000 world wide. Is that enough for the bitcoin eco-system?
