Findings of a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC) indicates that spending on smart city technology is expected to grow to $135 billion by 2021. This was released in conjunction with Future Cities Show, which concluded yesterday. The show was held in conjunction with the Annual Investment Meeting, and ran under the theme ‘Propelling Globalization through Digital Transformation’.

The global market for smart city information and communications technology (ICT) is forecasted to hit the USD 994.6-billion mark by 2023 from USD 476.7 billion in 2018. This was released in conjunction with Future Cities Show, which runs in parallel with the Annual Investment Meeting, held until 10th April in Dubai. The show this year runs under the theme ‘Propelling Globalization through Digital Transformation’.

One of the key highlights of this year’s edition is Geospatial and 5G technologies as well as virtual reality and augmented reality, which play an important role in enabling the growth of smart cities and are seen as fundamental backbones of smart city projects.

Some of the key participants at this year’s edition include companies as Green Mobility – a flexible mobility solution that compliments the city’s existing mobility offers. Dr. Adeeb Al-Afifi, Director of the National Program for SMEs and Projects, Ministry of Economy opened AIM Startup today. The Future Cities Show also opened today, which witnessed the presence of H.E. Abdulla Alsaleh, Undersecretary of Ministry of Economy along with Mr. Evo Morales, President of Bolivia and Mr. Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Both the shows run in conjunction with the Annual Investment Meeting (AIM), which takes place from 8th to 10 th April.

“AIM has started today under the theme – Harnessing Global Digitization to Empower Startups and SMEs, and in partnership for National Program for SMEs and Projects as both are the fruits of innovative ideas that help in boosting national economy. Findings of a report titled ‘Role of Smart Cities for Economic Development’ estimate that the smart city concept has the potential to boost the economic development of global cities by over 5 percent and deliver at least USD 20 trillion in additional economic benefits by 2026.

The numbers were released as discussions on the economic impact of smart cities have gained momentum amidst continued exponential technological advancements and innovations. These dialogues will take the centre stage anew at the upcoming Future Cities Show, which will take place from 8th to 10th of April at the Dubai World Trade Centre under the theme ‘Propelling Globalization through Digital Transformation.’

The global market for smart city information and communications technology (ICT) is forecasted to hit the USD 994.6-billion mark by 2023 from USD 476.7 billion in 2018, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.8 percent, a report by BCC research showed.  The report attributed the exponential expansion to the rising number of smart cities worldwide in light of the rapid urbanization rate, booming population, and calls for sustainable development.  

North America is seen to take the lead in terms of market size but Asia-Pacific will experience the highest growth at 18.9 percent CAGR, the report said. In MENA region, a separate study conducted by KPMG revealed that smart city spending will double from USD 1.3 billion to USD 2.7 bilion by 2022.

This reality is the influential force behind the flourishing global smart city ICT market worldwide as presented by the BCC research. This state-of-the-art tool can also read vehicle plate number and sends a live feed to Command and Control Center. This year, the use of AI has helped the Dubai Police apprehend 550 people, 109 of which were wanted criminals and 441 were suspects in different crimes....
