Maybe they're trying to reach a specific demographic - cricket fans are often financially savvy and brand loyal. Or perhaps they're just aiming for that massive viewership and hoping to build brand awareness.
Right buddy, the companies will target the high profile events and try to make their brand visible to as much audience as they can. However, i still feel that there should be some relevancy for the brands advertising their products with respect to the event where the ads are being run. Irrelevant ads will not only waste the resources for the company but can have a negative impact too on their sales.
Since we are living in a digital era, with all those social media platforms that have introduced targeting marketing according to the interest of the audience and and with the use of Artificial Intelligence, I think there is no room for random ads being displayed just because the event is popular.
