Actually there is some useful distributed computing that can be done for some games, and that is "artificial intelligence" for "non player characters" (NPCs).

By farming out the running of characters to third party computers, in particular to small scale third party computers such as individual gamers's personal computers, the game gains the possibility that from time to time some of the characters that normally are controlled 24/7 by scripts will be directly played by a human player.

That happens partly because some of the people running the characters will run afoul of situations the scripts cannot handle and some will hopefully even be actively working on scripts thus be right there watching how the scripted character behaves and thus possibly able to be lured into over-riding the script to control the character manually if approached in the right way with the right offer by some other played character.

If vast numbers of characters are thus deployed, vast amounts of crafting, mining, fishing, armoursmithing and so on and so on can be done even if there are few actually live players actually playing at any given moment. That in turn allows larger scales of play to be zoomed into; for example a village of a hundred inhabitants that in some other representations would not actually consist of a hundred individual characters, instead being a mere abstraction, could actually be walked around in as an individual character and each individual inhabitant be interacted with individually.

The bandwidth requirements for this are not high at all; a personal computer could run a hundred characters using less bandwidth than one three dimensional graphical view from just one of those characters' point of view would take, since the scripts have no use for graphical views, all they need is a simple textual description of the situation the character the script controls is in...

Err, I mentioned onlive above........was it based on a distributed de-centralized p2p solution? No

I belive the largest issue is latency vs actual bandwidth, most western countries have cable or FttC now so up to 100Mb, but all the cloud gaming companies have solutions to this.

For clarification, the reason I said it should be "gamecoin" in the title, is because I dont actually envisage a new currency needing to be created, it could be ran on FIAT, litecoin, bitcoin whatever.....

This reminds me of OnLive, which recently collapsed...
The simple fact of the matter is that consumer internet connections aren't good enough in most places yet.
In addition to which, you'd not need a whole new currency to do something like this...

So I got to do some further thinking on this whilst in the shower!

The big value proposition from the current corporations trying to enable cloud gaming services is "play AAA titles on any device", using their streaming technology to bring the power of a single Nvidia/AMD high end GPU (or even a portion of one), to a dumb device like an android box with limited capabilities.

Now thats all pretty cool, but I think what would be better is creating a game which required hundreds or even thousands of of PCs/GPUs to even run, a title so big and immersive that maybe it mapped the whole world as the game map (google maps is a good start to build that off). This would be a huge title which nobody could feasibly own or host themselves at home, they would need the massively de-centralized network of GPU compute that only someone like the bitcoin community can provide. With ASICs potentially taking over soon it could be an ideal re-purposing of bitcoiners hardware.

Over time, the whole universe could be mapped into the game. Maybe it costs 1BTC per life and you only get one life at a time (no continuing). Maybe in a few years virtual reality and neural feedback get built in.

Maybe, you are playing the game already!  Cool

Damn did I take the blue pill last night or something?

Well actually title should read "gamecoin".

Basically was thinking of alternative "pay for compute" solutions last night and came up with Gamecoin, however it does not need to be a cryptocurrency.

Basically at the moment the huge trend developing is cloud gaming, especially device independent cloud gaming using large amounts of Nvidia or AMD GPUs in a datacenter.

A couple of examples of "hot" concepts at the moment.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/cloud-gaming.html
http://www.ciinow.com/

There are also a couple of successful solutions particularly gaikai and onlive.

So, for every one of us that has a powerful gaming PC (or a farm of GPU miners), there are another 100 people (arbitary number) in the world who cant afford, dont have the motivation or would like to game on a non-PC device.

Surely the solution is a de-centralized peer to peer cloud gaming service? utilizing virtualization?

I am sure there are a lot of challenges in making this work, but surely on a peer to peer basis there can be numerous advantages over a centralized cloud gaming service?

First one that springs to mind would be the ability to pick closer (ping times) of "gaming hosts" and the ability to pay more for the best systems?

Thoughts?
