Games are a way that we learn as children. Researchers believe that games are an integral part of our development and our brains are hardwired to play. Today social media and gamification apps are taking this to a whole new level in a variety of fields. Research on social media shows that people are triggered to produce good feeling dopamines when people click on their photos and videos. These give the user a feeling that something good has happened and often makes them happier. On the other hand, when someone doesn’t get much traction on social media they often feel left out and it can become depressing. These “mind games” are becoming increasingly prevalent and it seems most of life can now become gamified.

Gamification apps like Tinder have turned normal human face to face interaction involved in meeting someone into a simple profile photo where you click left or right to choose who you might date. The more matches and messages you receive the greater the dopamine high affecting your self esteem in terms of physical attractiveness. Fitbit sends you motivational rewards and encouraging messages to meet fitness and health goals. You can make challenges with other people to capitalize on our competitive nature.

Gamification is changing the normal ways of decision making and give virtual rewards for participation that are directly reflected in our brain chemistry. This is an amazing real life example of how social engineering can work to make our actual physiology to be altered by digital social interaction. One utilization of gamification that people rarely consider is the trade in cryptocurrency.
