There are three Robocoin ATMs installed in Austin Texas. The closest to me is about a kilometer away. Just today I made another Bitcoin purchase from it. It took 90 seconds from start to finish.

I enter my mobile number, enter my PIN, put my hand on the palm reader, scan my QR code for the receiving Bitcoin address, take a paper ticket, then insert fiat bills, then receive a receipt. 10 minutes later the transaction is confirmed and present in my Blockchain.info hot wallet.

Robocoin ATMs recognize me, complying with US AML/KYC laws, so there is no need for an attendant.

The fees are higher than Coinbase, but I prefer supporting my local Bitcoin economy.

Cool. Could you provide some details how it works - what ID it requires, charges and how long it takes to put money in and take it out?

So, Do you guys already made decision about where you going to place it ?

They are finalizing contracts now on some locations already so once they finish all that legal stuff they will publicly announce where the machines are being placed. I can't wait for the initial launch of the ATMS. Smiley

So it seems with ZipZap that you can only pay by cash if you have already registered your id and address documents online.  I don't know how they could operate legally  in the UK any other way.

I think this is the case, but to use Bittylicious you can buy small amounts with no documentation and this is increased the more info you provide and verify.

Well 'early' is a bit vague. Zipzap were meant to be going live in the UK 'early' this month too, but nothing so far.

Bitcoiners can now pay cash for bitcoins at 28,000 shops across the UK, thanks to a new service set up by ZipZap.

The service enables people to head to their nearest ZipZap payment location, hand over cash and see bitcoins deposited in their wallets almost instantly.

Currently available via Bittylicious, BuyBitcoin.sg and BIPS Market, the service will go live with ANXBTC and ANXPRO next week, followed by Kraken, CoinMKT and BTCX.se.

Ah.

Customers simply have to log into their accounts with one of these companies and select the cash payment option, they then choose the amount of bitcoins they want to purchase and head to their local ZipZap payment location to complete the transaction.

So it's not just as simple as topping up you phone. You might as well just use Bittylicious directly really.

Interesting of capitalism.

Does anyone wonder if the various countries' tax authorities might start surveillance of these ATMs? Sounds ultra paranoid, but what if they get (more) desperate? is it against the law to purchase BTC whilst wearing a Guy Fawkes mask?

Probably not unless you're already under suspicion or surveillance for this kind of thing.

I am sure everything will be legal and done properly but if there is govt surveillance well that is up to every individual country to decide what it wants to do. Personally ATMS will be a great way to get Bitcoin much more into the mainstream Market. If even 1% of the world's fiat can be converted to BTC it would mean BTC value skyrocketing to over 300k a piece.. Smiley

Ha I'm glad I'm not the only one that wondered that. I wonder if a secondary market in "please go to that bitcoin machine for me" would develop. Not dissimilar to localbitcoins.com really.

I think it is good to have something legal in place to make the users of the machine rest assured and also gives the owners and operators and vendors a good name but I guess that is just my opinion. I think all in all it can only enhance the name and presence of Bitcoin in general would you agree? Smiley
Definately. Probably quite a few people will try out "this weird internet money thing" just because its easy this way.

There is going to be a lot of excitement on opening day and there are lots of plans in the works for many other bitcoin related projects not just ATM machines so this will really bring Bitcoin the the Brits in a big way but not only for the Brits but globally. I am sitting on the edge of my seat wondering how big this company will grow by next year and what service it will do for Bitcoiners the World over.. Smiley

If everyone believes only saints are going to use Bitcoin we are not wearing rosy colored goggles but give the Coin a chance. Grin
I wasnt arguing against the coin, just wether those restrictions make any sense in conjuction with bitcoin. But since "following the money trail" is a common tactic and the blockchain is public for all time i kinda doubt bitcoin will be very attractive for criminals.

I don't know all the protocols off hand in place but there are people operating the ATM in the Cafe so it's gonna be obvious if the same peep comes to try get money in or out..
Hmm, so the "gang" splits funds first and each one gets just below registered amount?
Well, i guess they could go for camera surveilance, but then again, i heard the best prices are allways on halloween, no?

I don't know why a lot of you are focusing always on the dark side of Bitcoin use. Fiat has been around for centuries along with the Pimps, Prostitution and slavery, gambling, drug dealing, wars and what not. Bitcoin ATMS bring Bitcoin to the masses and if 1% of the population is dodgy let the Police and Crime fighters sort them out as that is their job. If everyone believes only saints are going to use Bitcoin we are not wearing rosy colored goggles but give the Coin a chance. Grin

Thanks for the link. I like the bit about there being no laws or regulations to cover it. Lets see how long that lasts.

Can Robocoin can accept multiple documents?

I think it possible the regulators would regard a combination of a passport and a photo driving license as sufficient proof of id and address.  There would be too much potential for fraudulent abuse with a single document.

A one way bitcoin machine could be classed as a vending machine or something similar, but if it pays out real cash then it might be classed as a betting machine or a cash point.  That wouldn't be great for you as the regulations are strict.

People most definitely would be hanging around, using it to clean illegal cash if at all possible.  A number of gangs in London use 'fixed odds' betting machines in bookies in some areas for precisely this purpose.  They pay groups of men to feed money into machines continuously.  The winnings are all legitimate and tax free and it matters not at all that they are losing several percent in losing bets.  The bookies don't care that much as the machines are highly profitable.

Having said that I would check it out if it is easier to pay in money than the current tortuous methods.

...I have been twice to the Robocoin machine in Vancouver and if over 1k Canadian dollars you need to put in i.d and be scanned like you do at airports lol. Smiley

What's to prevent someone from doing multiple transactions of less than 1K Cdn to avoid "documentation"?

I don't know all the protocols off hand in place but there are people operating the ATM in the Cafe so it's gonna be obvious if the same peep comes to try get money in or out.. All I know is the Machine is compatible with Federal laws in each country like the Machines to be deployed in the U.K are fully compliant and FCA approved. Smiley

Thanks for the information.

People new to cryptos should be able to get enough to satisfy their curiosity. This is a good thing, widespread adoption has to start somewhere. Though I wonder if the operators of the ATM would do anything to prevent clients from making multiple buys? Don't think they're law bound to do so.

Good to see the proliferation of these machines. Has anyone done a count of just how many there are? Of course, that number seems to be changing daily.

Great news. I'm sure we'll see a few pop up in other major cities this year.

I welcome any Bitcoin cash machine and welcome being corrected, but the UK has got to be one of the most backwards countries in the EU when it comes to Bitcoin.  I seriously doubt they can meet the regulations required for a two way mechanism to operate within the law.  The UK doesn't have ID cards and passports are not going to be sufficient ID to prevent abuse.

Why would ID be sufficient but passports not?

Nope it is a two way machine and there are limits to how much you can pull out or put in in a day. I have been twice to the Robocoin machine in Vancouver and if over 1k Canadian dollars you need to put in i.d and be scanned like you do at airports lol. Smiley

cool! i think this is a big step in bitcoin's life, as it'll make it much easier for the average joe to actually use bitcoin. i look forward to my first use of such a machine Smiley

What about how much you can pull out in fiat??

I will ask my Friends about that they have all the info. I just bought BTC from the Machine in Vancouver twice so let me get back to you on that..I think for every country there are different regulations regarding money laundering but I will ask what it is for the U.K if you like back and forth fiat and btc.. Very good question.. Smiley

So it's money in and bitcoin out, is it? Or can you do 2 way transactions, i.e. pay in a bitcoin, receive cash? The website is rather sparse on the details.

It will only be one way.  Two way is far too much of a headache and besides you wouldn't be able to get on a two way machine for all the drug dealers queuing up to launder their money.

@CaptainBeck the site is under construction still it even says it on the site. They are building a better website. Most of the initial capital funding has just come from word of mouth and without mentioning names (because I am not allowed to disclose here names of investors ) there are some pretty nice backers of this project and like I said be prepared to find some nice news coming soon.. Smiley Also may I point out this is a brick and mortar business as the machines are not virtual they actually are objects to be placed in venues around the World. There will be some internet based services also but they will come at a later date for now we are looking at ROBOCOIN ATMS. Hope this info helps a bit.

You don't have a clue and because you don't have a clue I suggest you keep imbecile comments off the forum boards.. no offense.. Smiley

Do due diligence before making accusations.. The company is registered and I know for sure the machine is on its way.. Smiley

Also thanks Sam for the thumbs up.. appreciated.. When they see the ATM go live they will not be able to poopoo it so not really worried lol.

You need to not care about trolls/scam callers on here.

But he is right, the website sucks, scam or no scam, a better website will help alot now of days, especially for a virtual based product or world.

I'm hoping this and the news on the tax change for BTC really boasts things here in the UK.
