It's probably not supported by any of the available miners out there, it's ancient, not even worth trying. Another member here had trouble getting his GTX 260 working, which is indeed newer than yours.
Buy a used HD7XXX or an R7/R9 2/3XX Series, they are reasonably priced.

every satoshi matters

Even with free electricity, an 8500gt would give you pretty much nothing, like 1 cent a month (pulling the numers out of my ass, but still)
edit: damn I didn't realize this was a necroed thread.

Does that thing even have CUDA cores at all?

If it does, I suspect they're an old enough version you'd be lucky to have ANY mining program work correctly on it, if at all.

YEah, it has some....  but... nowhere near what cuda cores are now.

The original reply above was on-point.  You need a miner app that supports your GPU....   Which will be quite an old one.  I have no links on them, your gonna have to try a bunch and find out what works, and more importantly, what you can mine with that gpu.

For instance, a GTX 650 has trouble mining on many algos;  it just won't...  It sits and nibbles 15Mh of LBRY cause that's one of the few it works well with.

There is a 32-bit (runs on XP) version of an XMR miner around that might work on that old of a card.
Does well on my GTX 750ti cards on my 2 remaining XP boxes.

That's a low end GPU from 10 years ago, I don't think it is even supported in most miners, and would probably lose money from the power draw alone compared to a tiny hashrate.

No matter what settings I add for this thing, I get no hashes showing up in any pool.

The miner console is outputting this about every other minute or so:

GeForce 8500 GT result does not validate on CPU (i=723, s=0)

If I leave warp configurations alone, I get a memory related error. Googling led me to change it to F16x5, which is getting me some hashes, but often erroring and nothing showing up at the pool.

I know its not a powerful GPU at all, but every satoshi matters. Please point me in the right direction..
