At least when a reply gets deleted, you will get a PM with a message and the reply quoted above.
Alternately, if you have the thread URL, you can try to get a cached version of it from Google. Just search the thread on Google, click the small arrow next to it and select "Cache". Or add "cache:" before the URL and press enter.
