Thanks for your comments, and they are all sensible for someone with a conventional lifestyle. However, I have different difficulties. For example, filming will probably be on the beach, in a nature park, or more frequently, in a supermarket cafe. I don't have much control over lighting, other than my position and direction of course.
Beach is a problem, not really a good place to record video, I think you'll have to spend a lot of time with choosing Adobe Premiere Pro Luts.
But Café is really a good idea. If I were you, I would choose Café with dark interior and would negotiate with them to allow me to come with my own light setup.
By the way, what I'm telling probably looks like a pro way of doing things, idk, I'm just like that Cheesy

I've got a lot of camera equipment, but most of it is a few years old.  For example, a Sony HDR-CX405, a Fujifilm bridge camera and a DJI drone. I've also got a Blue Yeti microphone. Money is not really a problem, but I need to know what I need before I spend it. All I plan to buy at the moment is a pop filter for the microphone. I'm using a Huawei i5 notebook, and the 1080 video doesn't look too bad. The sound is rubbish, so I'm pleased that I've got the Yeti. I'll start with free software, and I've installed OBS studio, and Audacity while I am learning.
I have Sony A7III with TAMRON 28-75 2.8 lens. Camera was used, lens were new, paid around 1900 euro.
This is my favourite sample video of my equipment (not my channel): SONY a7III + TAMRON 28-75 2.8 (LOWLIGHT TEST)
My Tamron lens has two version, G1 and G2. I bought G1. G2 was 2 times more expensive and the difference between these two in sharpness was very minimal. Sometimes you have to dig deep to not spend a lot of money Cheesy

You think to use Huawei i5 notebook to record videos? I'm kinda confused here, it will not really provide good videos. Can you show me the sample of some videos that you want your content to look like? The content of channel doesn't matter, just show me the sample of video you want your videos to look like.

I've been doing a lot of reading, and I've become interested in YouTube shorts. I rejected them at first, but YouTube seems to be changing its policy, and I suspect they will become more important in the near future. They are unlikely to make any money, but it should be osiible to use them to build authority and views for longer videos.
Nowadays it's very unlikely to make any money from youtube. If you want to make money, you should monetize your traffic, you shouldn't expect to earn anything from clicks on advertisements. You should sell product with the help of your channel to earn anything.
Youtube shorts are definitely a good idea, not only youtube but I think you should post your videos on TikTok too.

I registered the domain name RVshorts.com to use as a library for my shorts videos, and to try to pick up some extra traffic. I grabbed it last night, so it's only got some RV advertising on it at the moment. I'll sort out the hosting in a few days when I decide which CMS to use.
You can easily pick wordpress. I think it will be good if you check this website: themeforest.net. Tons of professional templates, this will also help you to decide which CMS to choose.

My greatest difficulty is that I don't like modern films or videos. I hate background music, morbidly obese felt animals, and people making stupid faces.
Well, the type of content I watch, doesn't include those things Cheesy Except background music which sometimes is really necessary.

I want to knock out some quick shorts for you guys to criticise, and I'll put them on RV shorts rather than YouTube at first. I thought that I would exploit my age, and aim the shorts at "senior citizens" who are frightened ot Bitcoin, thin it is a scam or ponzi, or just don't believe they could ever understand it. I've got some ideas that I could put over in under a minute.
You can also upload youtube video and make it unlisted. This way, only people who have your link will see the video.
By the way, if  you want to aim at senior citizens, what about to try podcast? Invite senior citizens, talk with them about Bitcoin. Idk, there are a lot of options out there.
Don't get shy with your age, are you afraid that people are gonna criticize you or what? I think your age will have a very positive effect if that concern you. Btw what people think is the least thing you have to worry about. Just do whatever you want to do without harming others, if you fail, at least you gain experience and you may change your attitude or try something different. 'What will people say' was stopping me for years and I'm never going to return back to that mindset. I tried and everything went well, so...

For example, filming will probably be on the beach, in a nature park, or more frequently, in a supermarket cafe. I don't have much control over lighting, other than my position and direction of course. Sound is more of a problem, and I'll probably make a portable anechoic chamber for the microphone. I've got a lot of camera equipment, but most of it is a few years old.  For example, a Sony HDR-CX405, a Fujifilm bridge camera and a DJI drone. I've also got a Blue Yeti microphone. They are unlikely to make any money, but it should be osiible to use them to build authority and views for longer videos. My channel is called "Offgrid Camper" which is perhaps a localised misnomer - Campervan is a UK term for the mode international "RV". I registered the domain name RVshorts.com to use as a library for my shorts videos, and to try to pick up some extra traffic. I grabbed it last night, so it's only got some RV advertising on it at the moment. I'll sort out the hosting in a few days when I decide which CMS to use. I'm in Asda at the moment, which is not the best place to make videos. There is lots of ambient noise, no power, and only 3 hours parking. I'll go to Sainsbury's or Morrison's a bit later, and either of those will be more comfortable. My greatest difficulty is that I don't like modern films or videos. I hate background music, morbidly obese felt animals, and people making stupid faces. Those seem to be present in many videos and thumbnails at the moment. I don't like the modern trend to use staccato filming with jerking between unrelated images. Content educators seem to think this is good, and keeps viewers locked in to a fast paced video. The only fast pace for me, is getting the mouse to the back button. All of this leads me to believe that my videos are unlikely to go viral, but hopefully it will allow me to attract a small following of older viewers. I've had a lot of interest in my campaign to save old cars from people of all ages, and those people have got the money to start savings wallets for Bitcoin. Bitcoin would also be a great medium of exchange for buying and selling cars.

I can't even decide if I should shave off my beard for example. Obviously I want to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, but then I'm not prepared to compromise my beliefs and attitudes.
I believe for your audience, focus should be more on the knowledge you are trying to pass and not your beards. But looks can matter especially in the public eye for marketing.

Since it is a YT channel you want to start, it means you are in it for a long time and will make more videos, To first attract and keep your audience, you have to look marketable first before they realize the quality of your content and no longer care how you look even when the beards are later grown as they are now.

Some grooming and possibly trimming can work, so you can have a wide audience as subscribers first and quickly until it becomes established.

As I have already posted, I'm in the throes of creating a new YouTube channel, and I want to include a variety of topics in this. Amongst others, this will include general basic education on Bitcoin, and also guidance and experiences of running a full node in a campervan. I'm so far way from conventional attitudes and beliefs, that I would appreciate some help from you guys. I can't even decide if I should shave off my beard for example. Obviously I want to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, but then I'm not prepared to compromise my beliefs and attitudes.
I've started this thread in Meta, as I'm not sure which board to use to solicit opinions. My thoughts are that Bitcoin specific videos should go on the discussion board, but I need to make some general videios first, and I thouugh I might open those on the serious discussion board. Do you think this is the best approach?
Cool! I think I can really give you some good advice because this is a thing that I started a year ago and slowly is generating some profit. These are no ordinary advices, believe me.
1. Light is the number one thing you have to take care of when you start filming, invest in good lighting and background, this way you'll make yourself appear cooler and more handsome.
2. Work on your self-confidence, try to fake it in your head and then express it to the audience, this way it will really look natural. Your face, your voice your facial expressions should outshine confidence.
3. Lens are more important than cameras. Invest in good lenses, they can make you look even more attractive. I don't know your budget, you may plan to take videos with iPhone or with other smartphone but if you plan to buy camera, the most affordable and quality one right now is Sony A6400, have a look at Sigma lens. If your budget allows, go with Sony A7III and with some good Sigma lens.
4. You need good microphone too, I suggest you to buy Rode microphone but if you are on a budget, check BOYA microphones.

I remember you are an old person (just numbers). I really like it when I see energetic old men, full of life and energy! I think you know how to plan and organize what you want to say in videos, I just wish you all the best.

this will include general basic education on Bitcoin, and also guidance and experiences of running a full node in a campervan

This is a good idea and it will really work out because it has the best to give out to the people on the aspect of bitcoin discussion in general and this will be more reliable than other online channels whose content couldn't be trusted to deliver upto the desired expectations, you are a good representation of the forum because you will give out the best being a genuine member of the forum.

but I need to make some general videios first, and I thouugh I might open those on the serious discussion board. Do you think this is the best approach?

There's nothing bad in that, as long as it has nothing to hinder the quality to what you're giving out on serious discussion or the YouTube channel, all that is more needed is the idea being passed across to the targeted audience and to ensure a full delivery of them all.

Good luck finding members here with experience doing what you're doing.  I really, really doubt there are all that many living la vida van life like you are, and if anyone says they are you should ask for proof.  Aside from that, I give you mad props for dipping your octogenarian toes into all of these new technology....things.  You're not quite twice my age, but close enough and I bet you understand bitcoin and a lot of other things way more than I do.  Shame on me!  Good for you!

I can't even decide if I should shave off my beard for example.
Keep the beard.  If you ever start bragging about how full it is or start calling attention to it in your Youtube videos, then it's a problem.  I can't tell you how many millenial generation beard-happy bros I've come across who've whipped out their back pocket comb and started to groom their prize-winning beard.  Just don't go there.

I didn't read through this whole thread--are you going to link to your YT channel when you get it up and running?  I'll be happy to subscribe.  I actually started my own channel not too long ago, but it has nothing to do with bitcoin and everything to do with showing how shitty my town is and how tyrannical the police department is.  And one or more miscellaneous videos about that guinea pig I rescued.  Heh heh.

Goodnight, o_e_l_e_o 🌹
If this project is successful, it will be the second YouTube project that has strong affiliation to this forum. The other being BTC talks how was cool for the few times I followed up. I didn't know if it was Cyrus that was anchoring it.
But this, I'm sure I'm gonna see Pa Jet Cash whether bearded or shaved.
I really didn't think you would consider this, due to the extreme privacy believe of members of this forum. But then I am looking up to this project as I'll be among the first subscribers.

I've decided I'm going with the vanlife theme, and I'll have a number of streams within that. I'm not sure how YouTube handles that concept. My feeling that adding a Bitcoin hashtag would allow people interested in Bitcoin to be selective. Other videos may not be of interest to them, especially the quirky ones. I'm going to interview my friend's Rottweiler/Staffie cross dog for example, and that won't appeal to everyone. I've just repaired the hissing brakes on my van at no cost, and that may be of general interest, and not just for owners of old LDV Convoy vans. I own the domain name Save Old Cars and this is another stream that I intend to include. This is a 1990 Volvo 740 that I own. I call it "The Hoe" because of the last 3 letters in its registration number. I plan to bring that up to show condition so that I can attend some classic car meets.

With regards to the Bitcoin stream, I'm going to split the videos into a number of micro topics such as Blockchain, decentralisation/permissionless transfers, wallets, virtual assets as hard assets etc. I'd like to create initial videos, and have them peer reviewed in this forum. I can create updated videos with more authority. This is something that is/should be done in the medical profession, but it doesn't seem to be done with crypto. I'd be happy to give Bitcoin Talk the credit if that is within the rules here.

I keep hitting setups, so I'm sorry for the delay in this project. I'm currently in the Morrison's cafe, and I'm trying to activate an old dash cam I bought some time ago. I'm having problems with the memory card. It wants a TD micro SD card, and I didn't realise that the TF format was used on the early cards. I've got loads of SD cards, but I'm not sure how to tell which are TF format. I may just buy a new dash cam, as this one uses the early USB cable with the V-shaped sides, and I've only got one suitable cable which I use on the Blue Yeti.

It's an interesting niche you want to venture into and it requires lots of work, drafting and planning of new contents. I'm sure you already have in place the topics and written scripts for the videos. Talking about vast topics, it'll be great especially when you're doing it to keep your self busy. But if you want to rank faster, focusing on bitcoin contents alone will help you achieve the goal. Can you do this for 5 years non stop? Chasing a long term goal pays off indeed. If you must add other topics always find a means to initiate bitcoin into the video, it'll help indicate to your audience that, at your old age, you're fully into bitcoin. With those hairs your videos can go viral, maybe when the audience gets bigger in size, you can shave them off to catch their attention and as well create room for further conversation in the comment section.

Those 2 statements are not compatible at all:
Obviously I want to appeal to as wide an audience as possible
That's why I decided to hang my chanel around the offgrid camper theme, with special emphasis on the advantages of being over 80.
Let's get the data:
An estimated 150,000 people already live off-grid in the UK and the number is believed to be rising steeply.
That's 0.25% of the population. Even less of them will be living in campers.
The population above 80 years is about 5%. The percentage of people that own Bitcoin isn't that large either. That makes your target audience a niche within a niche within a niche (although I realize some of the niches can overlap).

If you want to appeal to a wide audience, you'll have to make it interesting to watch even for the people who will never do it by themselves. Many people seem to be interested in off-grid life:
3 days solo survival: 28 million views.
Winter survival shelter: 23 million views.
Building off grid cabin in the woods: 24 million views.
Most people will never do it, but it's nice to watch for people stuck in city life. Like me.

Preaching to the converted is totally fine! As long as you have something new to bring to the table.

That could be your niche. Hardcore Bitcoiners who want to be as 'independent' and off-grid as possible. One thing's for sure — you could attract interest from this demographic, but don't expect the masses to necessarily be interested.

I do not agree with your idea to start with a general video, just make a video about bitcoin. We recommend that you determine your passion from the start, this will make the audience loyal to your channel

I'd like to suggest a few suggestions to you:
1. Create a clear passion, just want to discuss bitcoin or crypto?
2. What video will you make? is the content knowledge about bitcoin, trading btcoin, mining bitcoin? or you will cover everything
3. Make a roadmap so you don't get confused when making a new video
4. Look for references and analyze competitor channels, what are their weaknesses
5. Set a target, is your target to create a YouTube channel to make money or to fill your spare time
6. Do it now. Drop your channel and I'll subscribe

If you want to quickly have a lot of views, make a YouTube video on how to get free money from bitcoin through a signature campaign. Grin But I don't expect you to do that, or else this forum will be flooded with spam  Wink

The core of this would seem to be my age
Looking old is sometimes really necessary for any explanation to appeal to all generations of audiences, in other words you have to make the best possible impression that your knowledge is beyond doubt in this space.

-snip-
I'm not sure that I'm qualified to start a Bitcoin specific channel, as there are many in this forum with a far greater knowledge of Bitcoin and its ooperation than me.
Unfortunately, bitcoin is only 15 years old which I don't think is very relevant for balancing someone's age with their bitcoin knowledge. If you are unsure of your own knowledge, I think you can focus all content based on your experience of being a bitcoiner.

Limiting or belittling yourself on what you want to do is not nice at all. The mindset of coming with this great idea is a already a sign that you’re going to do great when you kickstart your YouTube channel. Should i call this procrastination or not? The more you drop a message about this idea, the more I feel you’re a step closer to starting. It is better you don’t relent on this, we can’t wait to see your channel come live to enlighten people about bitcoin, and yours will no doubt be a reputable source to get information from.
About the age, there’s no age that should restrict you from getting what you want to achieve done, that shouldn’t discourage you but should serve as an encouragement to make a difference.

My thoughts on the beard were really based on the consideration of placing emphasis on my age. Apparently I look younger without it.
So you would not want to place any emphasis on your age, or have that supercede the information you're sharing? That's a valid thought, but if it contradicts your beliefs and what you want to do, I'll advice you keep the beards.
I've seen too many people change to fit into the social box once they start putting our contents although I'm sure you have tough mental.build from interactions here and will not fall into that.

Whether or not you shave your beard to look younger, it won't affect your appearance because you are young at heart. I know your age, but the way you participate in the forum and what you are so desperately passionate about make you much younger than those who do not know where and how to apply their strength and interest.
I became your subscriber in advance, and I think that I will recommend your channel to my friends as a channel from a person who is quite unique and interesting. Knowledge about Bitcoin is important to people, and the more correct information people get, the more they will begin to believe in Bitcoin and not trust those who slander it so hard.

Well thanks for all the positive encouragement. The UK gov thinks that statistically I've got about another 8 years to go, but that I have a 2.8% chance of living to be over 100. Personally I think I've just entered middle age, but aybe I'm delusional.

I did think of having a Bitcoin specific channel, but I decided that would probably be preaching to the converted. I've spent quite a lot of time looking at Channel Makers and other YouTube educators, and I decided to focus on my less common characteristics. The core of this would seem to be my age - there isn't much for or about people over 60 or 70, and my decidsion to adopt the van life and Bitcoin. I'm also interested in preserving the environment, and the quality of life and health for the bulk of the population. That's why I decided to hang my chanel around the offgrid camper theme, with special emphasis on the advantages of being over 80. I scrub up well, so I've never been overly concerned about general appearance, but I used toi be concerned about detail. For example, did you know that traditionally gentlemen had 4 buttons on the cuffs of their suits, and servants had 3. However, I have had to adapt to current social norms where very few men wear suits any more. In fact about the only time I wear a suit is when I'm attending court, and I've had a load of civil actions in my life. Fortunately I've managed to avoid any criminal court appearances except as a juror. My thoughts on the beard were really based on the consideration of placing emphasis on my age. Apparently I look younger without it.

I'm not sure that I'm qualified to start a Bitcoin specific channel, as there are many in this forum with a far greater knowledge of Bitcoin and its ooperation than me. I do think that I may have a good knowledge iof the way Bitcoin is adapting to the current banking and investment changes. Foe example, many people would rank the security of some assets in the fiollowing order - Property ( real estate ), fiat currency, and Bitcoin. With Bitcoin in a distant 3rd position. In fact I would reverse that order, and in justification, I would remind people that in the UK, the crown is the legal ownner of all property in the UK.

Right now I'm experimenting with a Blue Yeti microphone attached to a Huawei core i5 matebook, and using OBS studiio to create videos. It's a pretty simple and basic setup, and it will allow me to get started. Getting started seems to be the most important first step. Smiley I'm in Sainsbury's cafe, and I've decided that I need a pop filter, so I'm getting pretty close to submitting something foir general comment.

Bitcoin niche is very competitive but that doesn't mean that we already have enough videos for people who want to look for information about Bitcoin, I'm sure with the knowledge you've had you have the edge over your competitors,  people will not mind the looks the most important is content and the way you explain it.
Just use the best camera and the best microphone and you're good to go, you already have a group of subscribers and that is the Bitcointalk community and as you go and improve and cover a lot of topics about Bitcoin and what's happening around the industry, things will be easy for you and maybe one day you can do a live video or AMA ask me anything.

Many people that you are decades older than will consider retirement and spend their elderly age idle. But you have always wanted to use every opportunity to contribute positively to your society. You are an inspiration to me.

I will want you to use this channel and dispute the lies that Bitcoin mining is one of the major destroyers of the environment. Some unfair environmentalists have been brainwashing the people that bitcoin mining is highly unfriendly to the environment. And they have refused to speak the truth about the main polluters of the environment. We will never hear how electric cars and other acclaimed green energy products cause harm to our world. So it will not be a bad idea to have an episode to expose these lies.

I don't think the audience will care much about your appearance. People will be more interested in the quality of the information they get and not the giver's look. If your channel is impactful, your followers will even start mimicking or copying your looks and lifestyle.

Does look really matter?
How you look and appear to the audience is only relevant when the video is all about a pageant or modeling show.

In your kind of YouTube channel, which is mainly focused on sharing informative and educational information, what matters most is how helpful the video can be and the information it carries. I don't think anyone will really care about the bearded face; they might even not notice it if they are getting what they want from the video.

So just be you and do you. Why do your video compromise your beliefs? It's not an option, and even if you don't want to show your face, there are also possible ways of sharing videos without showing one's face. Only the voice and illustration of what's being discussed will be visible.

Well, I think you are doing a great job to educate others with such an amazing YouTube channel, and I will definitely subscribe to your channel without any doubt. I always thought that there should be a channel specific to Bitcoin from someone who has enough knowledge about it, and I truly believe that you're among those people who understand a lot about Bitcoin and that's why you can educate others very well about Bitcoin without any doubt.

Regarding help, it would be a pleasure for me to help you in any way I possibly can. I must say that you should take the first step, and after that things will be very normal and easy for you.

Don't shave off your beard just because the audience might like you more without it or you think they would. Stay true to what and who you really are. I am surprised you want to do this. I have always imagined you to be a hardcore privacy advocate.

When you say "general videos first," what exactly do you mean with that and why would it not fit in any of the bitcoin boards?

Educational content is always appreciated. Just imagine an audience that knows nothing and needs everything explained in an easy to understand way. I would stay away from too much technical jargon unless it's really vital to the content.

And please announce your YouTube channel somewhere. I would be interested to watch the stuff you release.

I can't even decide if I should shave off my beard for example. Obviously I want to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, but then I'm not prepared to compromise my beliefs and attitudes.

I think this doesn't affects your speaking and your general knowledge towards what you about giving to the general public, in as much as what you are saying is very informative and educative I don't think you should compromised your belief and way of attitudes.
However my point are, give the general public what they needs to know about your speeches and point of learning from your audience as I believe no one cares to see your beard rather wanting to grasped every little opportunities that could possibly leads them to success and how to go about with their bitcoin and cryptocurrency journey.

I can't wait to learn and hear from your videos.
