Same suggestion which Op should consider to try changelly and might able to resolve problem and in regards with fees then its really much lesser to Shapeshift. Its quiet odd that they don't recognize the return address.Just make sure that the app is updated just like what others said here and also try out on what Potato chips regarding on that tool and might resolve the issue. If not then contact shapeshift support itself.

Hi, the answer for this for anyone else searching is this website... I was just in chat on Shapeshift.io and was asked if my BCH address started with a "q" (it does) and was then told to use this tool to create a LEGACY address and then use that for the Shapeshift transaction...

I am not sure, what you try to do. Let us sumnarize, what you tried to explain.
You baught Bitcoin Cash. At purchase you gave your BCH address to recieve it. It seems, that the transfer was successful.
Then you tried to "convert" your BCH to ETH. You can't transfer but exchange.
What did you do at this step?
If you clicked on the shapeshift button, you should see on the left site the currencies, you wanted to send and right site, you wanted to recieve. If you did right, you clicked on the left site on BCH and on the right site on ETH.
Did you get at this step the error message or when appeared the message?

Have checked with the support team of shapeshift for this issue? I have checked about it just right now and I find the article in their blog itself. Please check that information in the below link.

I think feed per KB might be lesser than recommended.

Have you tried converting your BCH address into a different format? You can use this tool: https://cashaddr.bitcoincash.org

And make sure your app is updated. Also, If the above method doesn't work, try using shapeshift's web version.
