I emailed Gigabyte about my mobo:

Do the USB ports (either 2.0 or 3.0) allow 500 milliamp or 1000 milliamp as a max current draw? If yes, which ones ?

My motherboard model: GA-990FXA-UD3(rev. 1.0)

I'll be using them for several Bitcoin mining devices consuming 4.5 watts (900 milliamp each).

From Gigabyte:

Dear Customer,

All are the same and they can accept up to 1A
*Whether to support 3X USB power design, it may vary by models*
We are unable to verify your device as only iphone, ipad been verified for charging.

WooHoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still may get the dual USB cables, just to be sure I don't fry my mobo.

Ahhh, thank you kind sir,I wondered how it worked  Embarrassed

Found a site with 4 amp USB hubs:

http://www.synchrotech.com/product-usb/hub_00.html

That's a USB 3.0 hub. Most computers are equipped with USB 2.0 ports.  It should fall back to USB 2.0 data rates, but will it allow the increased power that USB 3.0 can deliver while it's plugged into a USB 2.0 port?  When USB devices negotiate for the power they can obtain from the bus, does that negotiation run between the device and the computer (which will only allow up to 500 mA, because that's all it can deliver) or between the device and the hub?

I think there's still an empty slot in my mining rig that could take a USB 3.0 card, if necessary...though with one of those, a hub wouldn't be necessary right away.  The card I have in another machine has two external ports, which would support the two Jalapeños I have on order by itself if I were to pick up another.

Most likely BFL will ship the dual USB cable with the unit.

Hopefully it'll have a power jack as well, just in case it's needed.  Kind of like USB hub's, they have a power jack and sometimes a power supply.  Most of the time you don't need it, but sometimes you do.

Will these dual cables make it difficult to see the device in Device manger,to identify the COM port #  Huh

How about powered USB hubs  Huh The ones I've found don't advertise the amperage draw in most cases or may not provide anywhere enough power even if they do.

BTW,I found one of these in my junk drawer:Belkin F5U101 4-Port USB 1.1 Hub w/Power Adapter rated for 5volts @ 2.5 amps.

So,it should handle at least 2 Jalapeno's.But,do I still need to "split" between 2 ports,500ma per port.

The dual USB port cables only have power connectors in the second connector, so the data is only transferred with the main plug, so it appears to the computer as only one device.

I'm a bit concerned about the power consumption of the Jalapeno's.At 4.5 watts (900ma) each & the USB 2.0 being rated at 500ma or 1000ma,how are we going to connect to our PC's if they are 500ma  Huh

Its still early in the game, but I would like to try & figure a solution well before thier arrival.

I have not confirmed if my mobo is able to supply 1000ma from its USB ports yet,I hope to confirm either way from Gigabyte soon.

My mobo:GA-990FXA-UD3 (rev. 1.0)

These cables were posted in another thread:

This then?
